when I look at the article in edit mode the featured image is there and is saved, but when I close it and look at the article in my list of scheduled articles, the article is there but the image isn’t. on other similar articles the images show up so something is wrong with just this one.

Hi there,
Please note that the Featured Images are not used in the Plane theme as seen here:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/plane/
If you want the image in your post, please add it within the post.
Cheers!

But I use featured images all the time – I am an upgraded customer, that was one of the reasons I upgraded

Featured Images are actually set by the theme not actually the Premium upgrade. WordPress.com Premium includes a custom domain, No Ads, Custom Design, VideoPress, 10GB of space. Take a look at the link for more information.
If you would like a theme with featured images, take a look here:

Thank you for that, is there anyone who could look at my site and let me know maybe the best three options for themes for my kind of blog – I am very overwhelmed by the number of options there and I can’t narrow it down to just a few that would be good for my style of blog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I would recommend these three:

https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hemingway-rewritten/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/suits/
Take a look at the theme support guides for more information.

On a slightly different topic but actually linked in a strange way, is it possible to insert a table or create columns in my current template? If so, can you give me instructions on how to do it. Thank you again I really appreciate your support.
-
Hi!
The easiest way to create columns within a post would actually be through “The CSS Way” shown here:
http://vip.wordpress.com/documentation/how-to-create-columns-in-posts/
Basically, when you create a post, you’ll want to click over to the Text Editor and insert the code mentioned at the link above. That will help to break your posts into columns. Can you give that a try?

Sorry I should have been more specific, I am actually wanting to create a table or columns on a page not in a post. Will those instructions you gave me work for that too or is there different instructions for doing it on a page? Thank you, Emily Jane
-
Hi Emily Jane!
Those instructions should work within a page as well, not just a post. Can you give them a try? Just to clarify, you’ll need to be in the Text Editor for them to work:
