I have two blogs on one account. Can I have two avatars?

  I have two blogs on the same account, but they are very different with regards to content. Do I have the option of pointing to a different avatar for each blog?

  Nope. The avatars are by user, not by blog. As an alternative, you can set up a new account (using a different email address) and make that user the admin of one of the blogs. That way, you can have access to the blogs and have separate avatars.
