You can have as many domain names as you like point to the same website–but only one of them can show in the address bar when users visit your site. Right now fivecultureslater.org is your primary domain. You also have therightthingblog.com mapped to your site, and you have your free domain http://therightthingblog.wordpress.com/. When visitors use http://therightthingblog.wordpress.com/ or therightthingblog.com they are directed to your site, but once they get there the address bar changes to your primary (or default) domain, which is fivecultureslater.org.
What happens if I let that one expire?
If you let any of your domains expire while they are mapped to your site, you and your visitors will get a notice on your site that the domain expired. To get rid of the notice you would either renew the domain, or unmap (basically, disconnect) it from your site. Absolutely nothing will happen to your content.
If I want to transfer my domain (www.fivecultureslater.org) what happens to my blogs?
If you transfer your domain and use it with another website, the content on your current blog will be safe and sound. The only difference is that in order to see your content your visitors will have to use either the free url that comes with your site (therightthingblog.wordpress.com) or the other domain you have mapped to the site (therightthingblog.com).
