I have two wordpress accounts and only want one.

    Merge wordpress.com accounts.

    Site: https://yeardot.wordpress.com.
    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

I assume you have another site in the other account, correct?

It’s not possible to merge different accounts, but you can transfer your site from one account to another. After the transfer one account will own no sites, while the other will own both. At that point you can then delete the account with no site if you no longer want it.

    `Hi kokkieh,

Thanks for your quick response, from which I gathered I asked the wrong questions to start:
I have two wordpress.com blog accounts (one which has a site). I also have a hosted website (using my own domain) which uses wp.
So, I think my first Qs: should be:
Do I have 2 or 3 wp accounts?
How do I check which wp account ‘my domain’ website is attached to?
If I delete my blog accounts, will that delete the website account too?

    This message confused me:
    ‘Close your account permanently
Delete all of your sites, and close your account completely.”

Does “all of your sites” that mean I would delete all of my wp accounts (2 or 3 accounts) and hence, lose the website with my own domain? Or does it only mean deleting the one account in which the message appears?

    Thanks for your help.

Oh, right, so I was logged in to my other wp account and it posted as juliamendelawitz, was meant to be yeardot.

  • What are the URLs of the sites? That can help us narrow down the right path forward. :)

    Hi macmanx,

Thanks for your quick reply too :)
    The sites are:

    yeardot.wordpress.com
    https://www.yeardot.com.au

The blog account without a site is: juliamendelawitz

  • Ah, ok, https://yeardot.wordpress.com/ is a WordPress.com site, and https://www.yeardot.com.au/ is a site using the WordPress.org software hosted elsewhere.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

You can safely close juliamendelawitz following https://wordpress.com/support/close-account/ since it has no sites.

If you close yeardot you will lose https://yeardot.wordpress.com/

Neither of those closures will affect https://www.yeardot.com.au/ since it’s a WordPress.org site.

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

Thanks for the clarity macmanx, good to know the .com and .org live independently; can breathe easy on that one now.

My next Q: is now regarding trying to delete the wp.com account for juliamendelawitz

When I go through the delete process I get to the point where the window says
“your account is being deleted” however at the same time, a message in a box in the top right of the window appears that says: “This user account cannot be closed while it has active subscriptions.” The pink circle spins but never completes the deletion.

I thought maybe my .org website was attached to this account but apparently it’s not, so what would be preventing the deletion?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi there!

I’m not seeing any WordPress.org sites or any paid subscriptions active on your WordPress.com account yeardot – are you sure this is the account you are trying to close? (If you’re trying to close a different account, please reply here from that account and we can look into that.)

If you’re trying to close your account with the username yeardot you will be able to close it by following the instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/close-account/

If it’s not working, please try logging in to the account from your browser’s Incognito/Private Browsing window and try following the instructions at the link above.

    Hi aisajib,

Thanks for your reply. I’m trying to close the account with username: juliamendelawitz, posting here from that account.

The message: “This user account cannot be closed while it has active subscriptions.” comes up when I try to delete this account.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Your juliamendelawitz account has an active subscription for the Akismet anti-spam plugin. I’m guessing you’re using that plugin on your self-hosted site.

If you no longer want that subscription, or you want to move that subscription over to your yeardot account instead, please contact Akismet support directly and they’ll be able to help you with that:

    Contact Us

You’ll be able to delete this WordPress.com account once it no longer owns that subscription.

Thanks for the reply and detection work kokkieh,

I forgot I had Akismet on juliamendelawitz. (yes, I do also have it on my self-hosted site.)

I removed it from juliamendelawitz and have no connected apps on there now but when I tried to delete the account again after removing akismet, I still got “This user account cannot be closed while it has active subscriptions.”

I logged out and in . . same thing. Any ideas please? Thanks for your help.

So, am I wrong or are the .com and .org accounts connected via akismet in this case? Is that causing the problem? I was under the impression they were independent sites. Confused . .

I think I’m seeing the problem now. Maybe a solution is to delete the .com account that has the site, i.e transfer the yeardot site to juliamendelawitz and then delete yeardot account. That way akismet won’t be compromised. Does that sound logical?

  • Removing the Akismet connection from your account doesn’t cancel the active upgrade you still own on Akismet.com. That has to be cancelled before you can delete the WordPress.com account, as the WordPress.com account owns the upgrade, and without the WordPress.com account you can’t manage that upgrade.

am I wrong or are the .com and .org accounts connected via akismet in this case?

Both accounts you used to post here, juliamendelawitz and yeardot, are WordPress.com username accounts.

yeardot owns a WordPress.com site, while juliamendelawitz owns no sites, but juliamendelawitz does own an Akismet upgrade for that plugin, which you’re using on a self-hosted WordPress site that has no other connection at all to WordPress.com.

The admin account you use to log into your self-hosted site is something completely separate from either your WordPress.com accounts.

Maybe a solution is to delete the .com account that has the site, i.e transfer the yeardot site to juliamendelawitz and then delete yeardot account. That way akismet won’t be compromised. Does that sound logical?

If you prefer you can certainly do that. Personally I think the simpler option would be to just ask Akismet support to transfer your Akismet subscription to your other WordPress.com account :)

But if you want to transfer your WordPress.com site to the juliamendelawitz account and then delete yeardot instead, you can find the instructions to do that here:

    Hi kokkieh,

Thank you for your reply, and for clearly answering each of my questions.

So, the best option would be as you suggested, making a request to akismet to move my upgrade over to yeardot.

Thanks everyone for your help. It was excellent, and speedy.

    Much appreciated, stay well :-)

    Regards, Julia
