I just lost over 20,000 hits

    I lost a couple thousand hits, which doesn’t bother me per say. But it was unfortunately timed – when my stats hit 10k, and i sent an email out with a ‘celebratory’ additional-to-the-weekly webcomic post, it did look a bit stupid when people saw a hit count that was not over 10k.

    I also lost over 19,000 hits in the last few hours… Two mounths ago I had the same problem and stuff fixed it for one day.

    “when my stats hit 10k…I sent an email out…”

    It may be natural and universal to want more hits, to want to know how many, and to celebrate apparent milestones like 10k or 100k or 500k or whatever. Certainly when mine hit 180k I started to wonder precisely when they would hit 200k and how much quicker the second 100k had been from the first etc etc — then they suddenly went down by 6k and now have to reach 180k all over again.

    It simply “doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things” and it may be best not to sweat. Here is Kipling’s advice:

    [IF]

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
    But make allowance for their doubting too,
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
    If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breath a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
    If all men count with you, but none too much,
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

    –Rudyard Kipling

    Kipling’s blog sucked, though.

    The WordPress message was taken down stating they were having trouble with the stats, yet, my blog has not been restored. I have still lost over 20,000 page views.

  • Unknown's avatar

    aw, how would you know if anyone is reading your blog?

    Earlier in the week I saw I’d passed the 35k mark and posted a ‘thank you!’ message to readers. Next day I was down to 32k views. How ****** stupid did I feel? Those missing views haven’t been restored yet.

    @rjjrdq – I don’t know, but I seem to get well thought out comments and emails about my blog posts so evidently someone is reading them.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I lost 18,000 hits, contacted support, they said they fixed it, but they have not, I wrote back to support, still waiting for an answer.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @morris108 – Likewise. I am sure that they are working on it though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ive lost around 12k too, but they keep saying that is “already fixed”.Well…not for me.

    I lost over 10,000 hits, not including the dramatic drop in daily hit rate since May 7. Has anyone else seen a decrease in hit rate on their blog?
    Once they are aware of the cause, I expect they would announce it and let us know how they will replace the missed hits, estimated or otherwise. Any reduction in perceived accuracy of readership would be very harmful to WordPress, so I agree they must be working on it.

    It is reassuring to know others are experiencing the same,

    My stats were sliding after 7th of May, but I think it was coincidence as I had a bad feed at that time, it definitely is worth checking here:

    My stats have been corrected.
    Nick from Automattic replied: I’ve cleared the server cache for your blog which was displaying the incorrect number. Should be resolved now. Let us know if you still encounter problems.

  • Unknown's avatar

    WordPress cleared my stats blog cache, and it is all working correctly now

  • Unknown's avatar

    Morris – how do you get them to do that? My stats are way down. I guess clearing the blog cache isn’t something we can do ourselves? And when they fixed it, were the “missing” numbers restored?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I contacted support and they cleared they restored my stats.
