  I have been unable to do anything after signing up today. I do not understand how you guys are so highly recommended by the blogging community because I have been at this all day and haven’t learned anything.

  Building a site hosted at WordPress.com is a piece of cake. You can be up and running in minutes. It sounds like you are building a site somewhere else.
