I just want to use the domain I paid for.
-
I just bought a domain from namecheap. I just want to add it to wordpress, without the .wordpress bit at the end of my url. Every time I enter my domain and try to go to the site admin to play around with themes, etc, absolutely nothing happens. The screen stays mostly blank white with the unresponsive control panel to the left. What should I do?
Ps, the blog shown is this post is not the one I’m trying to map, it’s only there because I have to include one.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The following instructions assume you are trying to map your new domain to a WordPress.com hosted site. If that’s not the case, these instructions won’t work. If you aren’t sure if you are trying to create a WordPress.com site, or a self-hosted WordPress site, this article should help: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Assuming you do want to map a domain to a WordPress.com hosted site, the problem might be that domain mapping works a little different than you are expecting.
In order to use the domain you purchased, you would first need to create a site that does include the .wordpress.com bit and then use the domain mapping upgrade to change your url* from whatever.wordpress.com to yourdomain.com. Here’s the full process you would follow:
1) Create a new WordPress.com site by clicking the blue “create another WordPress” button on this page: https://wordpress.com/sites. Note, the name you choose doesn’t matter much because ultimately it’s not the one people will use to get to your site.
2) Once your site is up and running you can connect the new domain to the site by following these instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain
Let me know if that works better. If not, or if I’ve misunderstood the question, could you explain what you are trying to do in a different way? What is the name of the domain you purchased? What is the name of the site you are trying to map it too?
*it doesn’t change exactly, more like covers or imitates

If it clears anup, I purchased a domain from namecheap and then paid jost gator to host. I appreciate your replies, and am trying use your input, but still not sure if I’m finding a solution.
-
paid host gator to host
That helps a lot. If Host Gator is your host, it means you don’t have a site hosted on WordPress.com–so the advice we give you here won’t really help because sites hosted on WordPress.com work a little differently than WordPress sites hosted elsewhere. (Here’s a rundown of the differences: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/)
The places you can go to get help are Host Gator–they have phone and live chat support listed on the front of their website: http://www.hostgator.com/
or the support forum for self-hosted WordPress sites located here: http://wordpress.org/support/.
Sorry about the confusion in the beginning. Hope this helps you reach the people who can help you !

I just paid $13 to map my namecheap domain to wordpress and switched the dns over. Then I was told it could be up to 24 hours for it to take effect so I guess I’ll see what happens.

Is http://escapezombielife.com/ the domain you mapped to http://mygrammarjunkyard.wordpress.com/? If so it seems to be working. As you update your site you may find this useful. http://learn.wordpress.com/
-
Yup, thats my site. Unfortunately ounce I’m logged in my site admin is still unresponsive. I can’t really do anything with my site so far.
-
if you go to http://escapezombielife.com/wp-admin while you are logged into WordPress.com you should be able to make changes to your site. note that http://escapezombielife.com “points” to http://mygrammarjunkyard.wordpress.com/ so what you will really be doing is updating your old site. If you decide you want to remove the old content and start fresh, here’s some tips for doing that: http://en.support.wordpress.com/empty-site/
Also, you said you purchased hosting from Host Gator earlier. If your URL is mapped to WordPress.com, you won’t need the Host Gator hosting at all.
-
Yeah, I’ll be dumping hostgator soon…yeah, I’m not sure what rhe problem is now. Seriously, site admin wont let me to a thing. I’m logged in and the screen is almost entirely blank and unresponsive. I’m running out of ideas.
-
That’s very strange. Could you take a screenshot so I can see what you see?
Here’s how to do that: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/
If you are having trouble getting your site to work, once you get the screenshot, you can post it using this tool: http://snag.gy/

I’m a volunteer, not a staff member, so I can’t see images in your media library. If you go to your library and click on the image of the screenshot a popup window should appear. You should see an URL box on the right side. If you copy the link in the URL box and paste it into a message here, I’ll be able to see what you are seeing.

Don’t change anything and take a long walk and have cookie at your favorite Latte shop – I am serious – it takes a while for changes to settle down – access to your site will be erratic during the first 72 hours – you will be the last one to see the changes
Hold Your Horses!
It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at escapezombielife.com, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again.
Nameservers Validated!Congratulations! The nameservers appear to be set up correctly for escapezombielife.com.

The domain mapping is working for me here on the west coast of Canada. (Technically I am on a little island off the coast in the Salish Sea.)
Wait a few hours then clear your browser cache http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and look again.
See here to observe the progress https://www.whatsmydns.net/ and know it’s not uncommon for your own ISP to be last to flush their DNS cache.

The DNS stuff shouldn’t impact the OP’s ability to get to the dashboard and make site changes though. I got the impression from his question that he was having trouble on that end.

@lizthefair
Ding dong! You are right. I did not read the whole thread when I posted above. :(Every time I enter my domain and try to go to the site admin to play around with themes, etc, absolutely nothing happens. The screen stays mostly blank white with the unresponsive control panel to the left.
