I keep getting an error message when I try to verify my site with google

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m following the instructions precisely to verify my website with google, but I keep getting an error message reading “Verification failed for http://www.xxxxxxxxx.com/ using the HTML file method (less than a minute ago). Your verification file was not found.” I can’t figure out another way to verify my account. How can I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there, Samantha!

Could you confirm that you are using our instructions to verify your site, rather than the ones provided by Google?

    Here they are:
    en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#google-webmaster-tools

You will want to make sure that you are using your domain name without www or http on the front end. Your URL should be: samanthacarrick.com

If you are doing all of the above, could you let me know precisely during what action, and during what step that the error is occurring?

If the error is occurring on Google’s site, you may need to contact them as I have no access to your account there. I did a search for their support forum regarding website verification errors:
    https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!categories/webmasters/verification

Looking forward to hearing from you on all of the above. Thanks very much.

Hmm. I redid the whole thing without the www (which I was using, whoops) and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

I’m getting a failure message at the final step, which is at the actual verification step but there seems to be an error just before as well. I’ve been following the Google instructions (perhaps I shouldn’t be?) and clicking through to a page on my site that gets generated once I enter the code from the Webmaster tools and each time I get directed to a “Oops! That page can’t be found.” messages and then when I try to proceed on to verification, the verification fails.

I’ve started from scratch several times and get the same code each time (which I suppose is how it works) and I’ve gone back and deleted the old attempts in the Google webmaster section and everything. The instructions are very clear and I really can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

    Hey there,

I see. Thanks for that description! It sounds as if the error is occurring when you’re clicking through from Google to WordPress.com.

    Please follow the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#google-webmaster-tools

Instead of clicking through to your site (this is when you get the error), you will go to #6 in our instructions. Don’t close your Google tab, simply open your blog’s dashboard in another window. Here’s a direct link to your site’s dashboard:

    http://samanthacarrickdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Let me know if this keeps you from experiencing the error.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I’m still getting the same error message. Is there any possibility that my browser is mucking things up?

I’m also not getting a code with the <meta name=”google-site-verification” content=” stuff on it from Google initially, but one that looks like this: google-site-verification: googlexxxxxxxxxxxxx.html. I’ve been going in and manually changing it to look like the example listed next to the box because the code doesn’t change like the WordPress instructions say it will if I don’t do that.

    Thanks!

    Hi Samantha,

You’ll need to make sure you’re using the “HTML Tag” verification option, instead of the “HTML file upload” option.

After you click on “Add a Site” (or “Verify this site” for a site you’ve added there), you may need to click on the “Alternate methods” tab to find the “HTML Tag” method. That will give you the right code to add to your Tools page at WordPress.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Thank you! It finally worked!
