I keep getting 'The connection was reset' errors on my site.

  • Unknown's avatar

As above I keep getting ‘connection was reset’ errors. I also sometimes cannot load the dashboard and get the same message. I have been trying to save a draft page and it takes forever.

There is nothing wrong with my connection, all other sites work perfectly OK and I have already tried clearing cookies and all other. I have also run CCleaner to get rid of any old stuff.

By checking the net I see others have had this problem but no answers are clearly definable.

    Help!!

  • Are you currently using AdBlock?

If so, would you please report that AdBlock is interfering with our website https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started and try to whitelist us https://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics#disable ?

Sorry, not using Adblock at all!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, have tried that too (took me forever to get into the wp-admin because of the connection problem) but just enabled it and still getting same error.

In the interim for your information I have cleared everything from Firefox (cookies, history everything), restarted the computer and repowered up the router.

All other sites are working without any problem, I can’t help thinking it must be some setting your end? Thanks Lee.

  • Which version of Firefox are you running?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, 13.0 is my version of Firefox – the About Mozilla Firefox tells me ‘You are currently on the release update channel’ (whatever that means!).

I do however doubt that it is anything to do with Firefox as I get a similar problem when using Chrome.

The following is the error I received from Chrome when trying to save a draft post.

    No data received
Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this web page later.
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

For your info: Chrome version 19.0.1084.56 m

    Thanks
    Lee.

Scrap this for moment, unless you have done something I have checked my router settings and have completely disabled the firewall – I will report back later… Thanks Lee.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, sorry that didn’t work either – It all appeared to be OK for 20 minutes or so and just when getting confident the connection reset again!!! Arrggghhhh…. Any ideas?

  • Unknown's avatar

Are there any other suggestions here? Thanks

  • Are you running any anti-virus or other security software? If so, would you please try with those temporarily disabled?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, was running avast but this morning disabled all antivirus completely for 1 hour, WordPress seemed better initially but still gave me connection errors and dropped out. I know of at least two other users who are having these problems, it is possible to check server side for errors? Thanks Lee.

Just by way of further information – I have also this morning disabled Windows Firewall and Defender – with these off I still couldn’t access admin and was getting connection errors! Thanks Lee.

Does anyone have any further ideas! I have now connected to my router with a cable as opposed to wireless to ensure that wasn’t the problem (it wasn’t!).

Something has changed recently and stopped this working, WordPress is almost unusable – I make changes and save them, it kicks me out and hasn’t saved all the work!

  • Would you please access Firefox’s Console and reload the page?

You should a bunch of errors. If you do, please take a screenshot and upload it via Media -> Add New in your Dashboard so I can take a look.

See this screenshot of the location of the Console: http://cl.ly/HLoT

On a Mac, it’s under a similar location below the “Tools” menu.

  • This may be fixed now. Would you please try again after clearing your browser’s cache?

If not, please refer to the instructions above for getting console output.

Hi there, tried this this morning but it didn’t work for me. I have uploaded ‘Error Log’ from Firefox console to airshotsdontcount.com media if this helps… Please confirm receipt. Thanks Lee.

Hello again, this may be of assistance. I have three blogs on WordPress, the only one with the problem is airshotsdontcount.com, I just cannot get into the Dashboard (well certainly more often than not and this morning is particularly bad!). Even though I can’t get into the dashboard on this blog I can on my other two!! (lrjbrooks.wordpress.com and courseoverview.wordpress.com)

In my view there is something specific about this blog that is causing the problem, it isn’t Firefox or browser related!

  • Would you please make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled?

  • Unknown's avatar

I did try this to no avail and was still getting problems yesterday – haven’t really tried this morning… What was changed your end to think that a solution might have been found?
