I lost Facebook ‘likes’ when I changed the ‘published’ date on a post – can I retrieve them?
-
So I changed the published date on a post, because I wanted it to appear at the top of my page, but all the twitter and facebook likes and shares have now disappeared. Is it possible to get them back? And please can someone tell me what would be a better approach in future? Thanks very much

Facebook likes attribute to a specific URL. Change the URL, and the Facebook API can no longer count the likes with the same post. Changing the date of a post in WordPress.com changes the URL to get to the post because it contains the post date.
You can use sticky posts to keep a post or a couple posts at the top of your site. Learn how here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-visibility/

Thanks very much, that’s v. helpful. Am i right in thinking that those shares/likes are permanently lost then?

You might try to change the URL to get them back. You might also add a plugin to combine share counts since you’re not using WordPress.com hosting. This topic is actually better for WordPress.org, the software you’re using. This forum is strictly for WordPress.com hosted sites.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are a little separate, and that can be confusing.
You’ll want to use the forums at https://wordpress.org/support/ for any support on managing your site. Hope that helps to point you in the right direction!
