I made a mess with URL's
-
Hi there,
I would like to have two site:
1. http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com
2. http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.comRight now I have four sites:
1. http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com
2. http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com
3. http://www.anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com
4. http://www.anannotatedcollection2.wordpress.comI would like:
1. http://www.anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com to have the url http://www.anannotatedcollection.com.
2. http://www.anannotatedcollection2.wordpress.com to have the url http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com.At that time, http://www.darklabstudios.com redirect to http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com (I believe I do this through my own hosting at http://www.domainsatcost.ca).
I’m having difficulty with the name transfer/site deletion options as explained by your site, hence my current predicament. Could you facilitate this change, or guide me through it? I would be available to do this over the phone if necessary.
Sincerely,
Trevor Burnett250.508.9051

Hi there,
This is a much longer post than I normally do, but you have a very complicated situation, so I apologize for that! I know it’s very confusing, but I think we can get everything sorted out to your satisfaction!
The important thing to remember in this situation is that once you change a blog’s name (thus surrendering its previous name), that previous name can never be used again by you or anyone else. It is retired.
You were a bit unclear because at first you said you only wanted two sites:
http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com and http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com
But then later you said you wanted:
http://www.anannotatedcollection.com and
http://www.darklabstudios.com.If you would like the first result, then the best bet is going to be to use the Export/Import feature for the blogs rather than to actually change the names of any blogs.
I went and checked out your sites, and it appears that only one of your sites, anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com, has actual content right now. You will just need to go to:
https://anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php?page=export-choices
Export the content, and then import it here:
https://anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com/wp-admin/import.php
If however you want your sites to be the domain names, then this becomes much more simple. You do not need to do anything with any of the empty sites. No one will see them if you do not direct people to them (though if you prefer you can delete them by following these instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ ).
To get the domain anannotatedcollection.com attached to anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com, you’ll just need to go to this address:
https://anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
Search for the domain, and purchase it. Let me know when you’ve done that, and I can move the domain mapping for darklabstudios.com over to darklabstudios.wordpress.com. That way each site will have the correct domain.
Let me know what you’d prefer!

Thanks for helping me resolve it. I’ve still got some issues, and I’d like to clear up some stuff:
I own http://www.darklabstudios.com.
http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com was my personal site, and http://www.darklabstudios.come redirected to it.
In retrospect, I could’ve changed the domain to http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com, kept the old http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com url for the new blog, and I’d have no problem.
I’ve transferred the data as you suggested, and now http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com has the right information on it. Unfortunately, the 15 followers are still stuck on http://www.anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com.
http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com is in the process of transferring.
At that point, if you could have http://www.darklabstudios.com forward to http://www.darklabstudios.wordpress.com it’d be appreciated.
Is there any way to reverse the damage that I’ve done, ie go back to having one site: http://www.darklabstudios.blogspot.com which hosts the An Annotated Collection blog and start fresh? I’m overwhelmed by having to re-sync and e-mail followers and family to explain everything.
-
I’m a bit confused by your last question. http://darklabstudios.com/ is still directed to anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com which has all of your content and all of your followers.
Are you saying that should be different?
-
Is it possible to change the url of http://www.anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com back to http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com?
-
No, but I could empty anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com, then you could import/export your content from anannotatedcollection1 to anannotatedcollection, and then I’ll move the domain for you.
Would you like me to start by emptying anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com?
-
I believe I’ve currently done that (having exported the xml from anannotatedcollection1 and moved it to anannotatedcollection).
I’m trying to avoid the losing followers that moving the domain will cause.
-
We’ll have to migrate the followers back.
If you have anannotatedcollection set as desired, I’ll move the domain and followers. Is it ready?
-
http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com is set up as desired (minus the followers).
Can you explain what you mean by moving the domain and followers?
I apologize for my lack of tech-savvyness and greatly appreciate your patience and help.
-
Ok, maybe we’re misunderstanding each other.
1. Do you want the followers (subscribers) of anannotatedcollection1 to follow anannotatedcollection instead?
2. Do you want darklabstudios.com to point to anannotatedcollection?
-
1. yes*
2. no, I would like darklabstudios.com to point to darklabstudios.wordpress.com
*I just realized something that I should’ve thought about earlier: that anannotatedcollection isn’t the best url to try to give by word of mouth.
If I go to http://www.anannotatedcollection1.wordpress.com>dashboard>my blogs>change blog address (for the blog “scrap”, anannotatedcollection1)> and rename is trevorburnett.wordpress.com, it will resolve all these issues.
Then all that is left is having darklabstudios.com forward to darklabstudios.wordpress.com.
Correct?
-
Yes, that is correct, and I have pointed http://darklabstudios.com/ to darklabstudios.wordpress.com for you.
-
Thank you very, very much. In the future I will be more patient in taking my steps before involving professionals :)
What’s the cleanest way to get rid of my excess blogs, http://www.anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com, and http://www.anannotatedcollection2.wordpress.com?
-
If you want to permanently delete those sites, please follow this guide:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-site/Please read the warnings and advice before deleting a site, as we can’t revert a site deletion for any reason.
If you want to hide your sites instead, you can use the following guide to make your site private so only you and other members of the site can view it when logged in:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ -
Thanks for the guidance. I have deleted anannotatedcollection2.
Could you empty anannotatedcollection.wordpress.com of all its content please?
