I messed up my menus – PLEASE HELP
-
Hi there!
I will try to keep this brief. I was editing my menus, and made some sort of mistake. Previously, all my short stories got posted to ‘SHORT STORIES’ in my Menu. Then I noticed I had a part of my menu called ‘NEWS’, which was set as a category, but there was no content on it as I had set it up early and didn’t really know how the site worked back then. This was set under ‘uncategorized’. The rest of my menus are PAGES. So, I deleted ‘NEWS’ from my menu, and now ‘short stories’ is empty but THANK GOD my stories are not deleted. They are still on the blog, but now just appear as the front page of the blog.
In short, I deleted a part of my menu and it has messed up my entire blog. I now no longer have anything under ‘short stories’, but all the stories I have posted are at the front of the blog. I want them to appear under ‘short stories’ like they did before, and for ‘short stories’ to keep being updated as I post a new story.
How can I fix this? I am terrified of messing it up further, and to lose months of work.
PLEASE help!
Kind regards from Renate Sætre

You have Short Stories set to a page called Short Stories.
You’ll want to switch that to the category Short Stories instead: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/#add-menu-items

Hi nacmanx, thank you for the reply! Unfortunately I’m not quite sure what you mean, or how to do this? Do you mean I should create a category called short stories, and go back to each story and make that category where they end up (to direct them there)?
I also tried a tutorial to add categories to my menu, as currently I only have pages. The tutorial didn’t work, as the steps it listed just don’t seem to exist when I try it. When I click the button to add things to my menu it only gives me the option to add a duplicate of “tips and inspiration”, as a page. I cant figure out how to add categories and I’m pretty much stuck :/
In short, do you mean I need to go back to each story and edit their path to a category called short stories? How do I do this, and does this mean I’ll have a working “short stories” button on my menu again?
Also, if I want a category to be for stories in Norwegian, can this be done the same way? For example now I’m not able to write planned posts for anything other than short stories, as they all end up the same place… I’d like to be able to pre-write posts for other than just my short stories in English.
I’m so sorry for needing to be spoon fed thia information, but running a blog is completely unfamiliar territory for me and I need help getting the basics right.
Thanks in advance for any help, and thank you for your help so far! :)

Maybe this will help :)
So you edit your menu, and add the category directly to the menu – you don’t use a separate page you create yourself at all.
That category will appear on your menu as a regular menu link, but when it’s clicked it will take people to the page at https://venreise.wordpress.com/category/short-stories/, which automatically lists all posts you publish in that category.
In short, do you mean I need to go back to each story and edit their path to a category called short stories?
The only editing you’d need to do is to make sure all your short story posts have been added to that category. WordPress will automatically add them to the category page from there.
Also, if I want a category to be for stories in Norwegian, can this be done the same way? For example now I’m not able to write planned posts for anything other than short stories, as they all end up the same place… I’d like to be able to pre-write posts for other than just my short stories in English.
Yep. Just make sure you add a “Norwegian” category to the posts, then add that category to your site menu.
Note you need to have at least one published post in a particular category before that category will be available to add to your menu.
