I need help choosing a free theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I know nothing. I need help choosing a free theme– I need a menu with room for 30- 100 topics on front page and sub pages for each of those thirty topics. It will be news-current event stuff. It won’t have a ton of pictures like your magazine theme and will need a much bigger menu area than I have seen

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Could you tell me a little more about why it’s important to have so many menu items? Putting that many options in a traditional menu makes it hard for visitors to find the info they are looking for.

If you could tell me a little more about your goals for the site, I’m happy to help you find a theme that supports a structure that works well for your content.

This will be an encyclopedia of all the current events and facts that I find interesting. It will be a newspaper(facts and figures),magazine(articles with pictures),encyclopedia all in one.Menu items will be things such as cholesterol, global warming, gov. gone wrong,10000 year old dinasaurs, 2016 pres. race, islam gone wrong, etc probably in alphabetical order maybe separated into different major catagories science -politics-religion

I have about 1000 articles right now. there is no marketing goal or money making intent for this site. It’s a “brain blog” it will have all the stuff I want to remember but my brain is too small to store.

Thanks for the explanation. Instead of adding all of those items to a menu, I recommend you use our categories widget in a sidebar of your site. Here’s more on how it works

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/

As for themes, 2014 would be a good fit

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/

You could have your categories listed down the left side (like a menu) and switch up which topics you highlight in the featured posts.

Let me know what you think and if you need any help getting things set up.

Ok the widget is on the website I’m ready to create my first category : Health(parent)– can I have a child and a grandchild–Diet– Apple cider vinegar?

    Category–Health
    Spencer: Hello
    →subcatagory–diet
    →How do I creat that
Spencer: I’m human – how can I help?
    Spencer: WP Admin>Posts>Categories
    Spencer: create Health first
Spencer: then create diet and mark Health as the parent
→I’m in the catagories widget and I put Health in title where is the parent designation
Spencer: It’s not in the widget
Spencer: You want to be in posts>Categories
Spencer: or you can add them manually while working on the post itself
→will it show up as part of the menu that way?
Spencer: you can make a custom menu
    →posts–catagories?
Spencer: You can read about custom menus here:
    Spencer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
Spencer: You can add a category to the menu to see all posts within it

yep I need a lot of help setting it up.
Can I have more than one major category?
I think I would like to have say 10 or 20 major categories each one followed by it’s own drop down menu. Right now I have Health I would like to follow that with Finance

I think Each category can have a menu– the downside is that my theme only supports two menus. Are there other themes that support many or unlimited menus?

  • Unknown's avatar

I see you are making progress here. Good work!

the downside is that my theme only supports two menus

You don’t need multiple menus to make this work, you just need to use the sub-menu feature.

I see you already have have sub-menu items set up as well, do you have any questions about how to continue to add to that menu?

I lost the left column of my website with my menu on it. It was there when I went to bed and it’s gone now.

  • Unknown's avatar

I still see your left column, although it does look different than it did when I viewed it this morning.

    This is what I see

Is that what you see? If so, let me know how it’s different from what you want and I’ll help you get things back into shape.

this is way over my head– in chrome there is only a header. the article is center justified with no left or right column just empty space. In fire fox it is perfect– left column with menu options are there and the right column is gone just the way I want it

Try expanding your browser window in Chrome. When the window gets narrow, the menu disappears.

I am going to try to go with a static front page with a background picture and a couple of quotes. Navagation on left column and a right column that becomes part of or an extension of the center. Problem– having a little problem with the picture ” The uploaded file is not a valid image. Please try again.”

  • Unknown's avatar

Please let me know if you have any pointers for placing a picture in the background I’ve tried 2 –one in word and the other in publisher2013

Just to confirm, you’re trying to upload an image under Appearance -> Customize -> Colors and Backgrounds. Correct? Can you make sure the file you’re trying to upload is an image (JPG, PNG, etc) and not just a .doc file? It sounds like the error message you’re receiving is indicating your trying to upload another file other than an image.

If you have an image within your Word file, you should be able to right-click the image itself, download it to your computer, and then upload that image directly (instead of uploading the Word file).
