I NEED HELP I CANNOT GRASP THE CONCEPT OF BLOGGING
-
I have spent a lot of time trying to understanding blogging. I have a blog which I have a specific purpose for. I cannot be a technophobe as I have been using and writing about computers since about 1979. BUT, there is vast amount I don’t understand at all.
Sticking to blogging.
How on earth do you get the readers ? Why do blogs that seem to be nothing more than impenetrable verbal diarrhoea about absolutely nothing anyone would want to read seem to attract vast numbers of hits ?
So far, many hours of peering at things all over the internet have told me virtually nothing. Why does any sensible information about anything on the internet seem to be so diluted with a barrage of other useless information – ads and zillions of other things making the thing you are looking for invisible or completely confusing on the average page for instance. And the endlessly misleading,. torturously devious, dishonest ‘come-ons’ luring you to look at something which is irrelevant.
And what about this sort of stuff:-
Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.
You can also put code in between backtick ( ` ) charactersObviously any normal person does not speak this idiot language, so why are there never any explanations of what this sort of thing might mean.
I need to see a blog tutorial, explaining the basic facts in normal language, because otherwise I cannot afford to waste any more time doing something that seems spectacularly pointless.
Once again – HELP.

There is a link to the FAQ at the top of the support page. It’s quite in-depth. Here’s an entry to start with:

Why not narrow it down? What do you need to know to do your blog? There’s no point trying to topple PerezHilton or even bothering to find out who he is if you’re not a gossip-oriented person. You don’t need to read BoingBoing if you’re not a funky techy person. With over 75 million blogs, the field is too big for one person to totally understand it.
Here is the absolute basics:
Blogs in Plain English:

Don’t struggle with blogging – sounds as though you have enough to struggle with in your life already. Just pick a topic and write about it. From what you’ve written, you have at least two strong possibilities for a topic: technophobia; being a single dad.
Write and enjoy! -
I think you’re starting in the wrong end.
You can write about what you want, and over time, you’ll find other bloggers you connect with and share opinions with. I have hardly any readers of my blog, but I’m not worried – I’d rather go slow than have to resort to braindead posts and using words and populistic phrases that people search for. You know – celebrities, s(e)x etc.
Whenever you encounter things like this
Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.
just ignore it until you really need it – it refers to html tags, and look at it as a “need to know”. You can live happily on the net for years without needing to understand or use it.As to get the readers -there is a pile of threads on that already, and depending on what and who you’re writing for… you could simply add the address to the bottom of your emails – but subtly! Snowballs will roll, if you write well and interestingly.
Don’t stress – there is a lot of idiots in this world with matching websites. You don’t have to play their game.

Obviously any normal person does not speak this idiot language, so why are there never any explanations of what this sort of thing might mean.
…you’re using and writing about computers since 1979 (when you absolutely have to have a basic grasp of computer language to operate it)…and you don’t know anything about HTML tags? I don’t mean to disrespect you or dispute your claim, but I find that hard to believe. Where were you when the internet was born?

Well, relax. You are getting too bloated on blogging.
Blogging is blogging, your personal space, your personal diary, your desire, your views, you love and hate, and express yourself.Actually, just think that blogging is diary now doing away with papers. Basically, computers were hailed for being substitute to papers and pens.
I got the same puzzle with you as Catshade.
I also no know what those tags are. But I know how to type lor~ :D

Blogging is fun. If you’re good, you can make money from doing it. That’s what I know about blogging. As for me, I blog for fun sake. Nothing more. If blogging doesn’t sound fun to you, delete your blog. Easy as throwing your diary out to your trash bin.

Today’s normal people do SPEAK this language. Guess we all know who’s ‘the idiot’ he referred to.
-
Blogging is just exactly the same as a huge crowd of people all babbling on at the same time, and people do different things in order to get attention. You might clmb on a chair or start jumping up and down [which is what you are doing] but if you have a special theme like say jazz you join a jazz forum. It’s all about connecting, meaning something to someone. But everybody wants it as bad as you, it’s tough and selfish.
But if you wanna give something? who knows? -
Obviously people are interested in things like, “How to Properly Pour Mustard on a Hot Dog. I guess it’s what interests people. I don’t get many hits either, but I write for the fun of it. Look at YouTube. Who cares about someone’s dog farting? I don’t watch things like that. I like to read and watch things that are uncanny.
-
Also, since no one else has mentioned it, writing in all capitals is considered “shouting” online, and rude.
I’m surprised you didn’t pick that up in your time working with computers. Perhaps you are a computer builder, rather than a user?
Also, I have a blog that is pretty much 95% insects. Insects, insects, insects.
And I get about 1000 hits/day, with gusts of up to 16,000.You might want to google “long tail”–that will explain a great deal about the internet and it’s many niche audiences. You can be as niche and eclectic as you want online, and someone, somewhere, will be interested.
Will they pay for it…that’s a different question.

Blogging is essentially what you can do when you need a “mental health” break. It is a constructive and thought provoking concept, which is more beneficial than wasting time per se. It is the one thing you can control as far as how much or how little thought you really want to put into it. It is your choice! Whether you understand it or not, that is the exact beauty of it. Whether you consider yourself an aspiring freelance writer like myself, or perhaps you are a fulltime homemaker needing to vent about how sick you are of trying to come up with new and exciting dinners for your family every night—- EVERYONE CAN BE A BLOGGER!! Just delight yourself in the freedom of it!

Actually, when I think of it, I don’t think there is a “concept” to blogging. It’s just a squillion people with a squillion agendas. And the internet – well, you won’t find the king unless you bring him with you.

I think this is one of those cases where he basically just needs to learn how to internet D:
-
cadash on settings you can link your blog to your name so that people can click on to your blog
