I need help moving my subscribers with Jetpack

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi friendly helpers at WordPress.com.

I recently migrated my blog from wordpress.com to self-hosted WordPress and discovered that my wp.me shortlinks were
not working; so I had to delete Jetpack & reinstall it. As a result, my subscribers are at 0.

You had very kindly helped me transfer my subscribers (see old forum: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/i-need-my-subscribers-moved-with-jetpack?replies=7), and I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing it again out of the kindness of your heart.

My old blog was http://thethinkingcloset.wordpress.com and the new is http://www.thinkingcloset.com

So sorry for any inconvenience, and thanks in advance for your help.

UPDATE: It looks like I still have my old Reader followers still on my old wp.com blog & need those moved to the new site, plus I have the exported CSV of email subscribers from my old blog & need that imported to Jetpack, too. Both of those things should recover almost all subscribers. To whom you should I send the CSV file (if you need it).

    Thanks for your help.

Just checking in to see if anyone is available to help me solve this problem. Thanks.

Any chance someone could help me out today with this?

I’ve tagged this for staff attention so that they can get your subscribers moved over for you.

    Hi there!

I ran a test on your site and it isn’t connecting to Jetpack properly – which is why you’re not seeing your subscribers.

Can you try these steps for me?
    1) Disable the Minify plugin.
    2) Disconnect and reconnect Jetpack.

Once you do that, leave Minify disabled and respond so I can check your connection again.

    Thank you!

Thanks for your offer to help helper-heroponriki.

There definitely was a glitch there with the W3 Total Cache plug-in (we got an error message about it), so we’ve disabled it completely. Deactivated and reactivated Jetpack.

You can check the connection now. And if there’s any way to retrieve all of those lost subscribers, I’ll be forever grateful.

(And is there a cache plug-in you would recommend that works better with Jetpack?)

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, check again and it should be working for you now!

Also W3 Total Cache should work with Jetpack, so delete and reinstall the plugin – there might have been a bug or bad install with it.

    Happy Blogging!

    Thank you!

And quick question related to another issue: since I migrated to WordPress.org, my WordPress Reader followers have been receiving notification of all new comments on my blog in addition to my blog posts. However, they never subscribed to receive all those comments. Any idea what might be happening there or how to unsubscribe them from comments? I affirmed this is the case because I follow myself in WordPress Reader and can see it, too.

  • Unknown's avatar

When I reconnected your followers, there were 200 users subscribed to comments for your site.

However, they will be able to remove themselves from receiving comments by following the steps here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/following-comments/#managing-post-comment-notification

They can also turn off comment notifications through their WordPress.com Reader:
    http://wordpress.com/#!/read/edit/

Next to each site they’re following, there should be an “edit” link. That will give the option to change the frequency of new post notifications or whether or not they will receive comment notifications.

    I hope that helps!

So…there’s definitely something strange going on with the comment subscribers. As I’ve verified with several of my WordPress Reader followers, soon after my migration to WordPress.org, EVERY SINGLE comment to every post (including new ones) started appearing in the reader.

I asked one of my subscribers to try the methods you mentioned.

    Here was her response:

“Okay, there is the thing. I only follow you via my wordpress reader, not an actual e-mail subscription. Even after you changed over, I continue to receive your new posts (and many, many comments) in my WordPress reader.

As you can see below, I have selected ‘off’ for both “send new posts by email” and “send new comments by email”. However, I still get comments in my reader.

Now, I followed both suggestions by the WordPress help desk. I followed the ‘reader’ one to the letter, as you see below. However, because I do not receive ‘comment notification’ via e-mail, I am not given the opportunity to ‘discontinue’. Also, I have not click ‘notify of comments’ on your individual posts, either.”

Any idea how we might fix this problem? I don’t want to clog up 200 readers with comments that they didn’t subscribe to.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that does sound odd. Let me look into it further and I’ll get back to you once I have more information.

    Thank you!

The problem is getting worse! My poor WordPress Reader subscribers are now not only seeing every new comment and reply, but they’re each showing up twice! They’re multiplying like bunnies. (A reader let me know. And I just checked and saw it for myself.)

Hopefully we can get this resolved soon, so I’m not clogging up their readers with double comment bunnies! :-)

I understand your frustration – it has to be difficult for you and your readers!

We are looking into it and it’s taking a bit longer than I hoped. But I haven’t forgotten about you! :)

Thank you – and your readers – for being patient with us. Let me know if I can help with anything else in the meantime.

    Hi there!

Can you do a couple of things for me?

    1) Can you disable the W3Cache plugin again and see if that helps? Please leave it disabled for the time being.

    2. If that doesn’t work, can you send me a list of all the plugins you have installed on your site and out of those which ones are active?

    Thank you for the help!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure! We have not yet reactived the W3Cache plugin, so that’s still disabled.

Here are my current active plug-ins:
Askismet, AutoPost Thumbnail, Backup WordPress, CataBlog, Collapsing Archives, Comment Reply Notification, Dynamic To Top, Genesis Grid, Genesis Simple Edits, Genesis Simple Hooks, Google Analytics Dashboard, Image Widget, Jetpack by WordPress.com, nrelate Related Content, Pinterest Pin It Button for Images, Pinterest RSS Widget, Regenerate Thumbnails, Restore Image Title, Tako Movable Comments, Ultimate Coming Soon Page, WordPress Importer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for that information!

Our systems team changed a few things and I believe we have it fixed for you now.

Please let me know if you continue to see this problem with the comments/posts.

    Thanks again!

  • Unknown's avatar

I appreciate all of your hard work on this. Unfortunately, the comments are still popping up when they shouldn’t. Hmm…. So strange!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh no! :(

Let me look into this again to see what’s going on. Sorry about the inconvenience. I’ll post a response once I have more information.
