I need help with cropping an image in my blog post using the block editor
-
Hi, I need help using the block editor to crop some images I am using in my blog post. I select the picture and the option for cropping appears. However, some light gray lines and square grids form on my pic and the cursor with the four angles. I try to drag the corners to crop the picture but am unable to do so. Please help. Thanks! 😁

One way I was able to fix this was to delete the picture and then go back to my media library and crop them reinsert the picture into my post. This is a bit of a hassle but I can’t figure out how to do it in my post so…..

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching out.
I try to drag the corners to crop the picture but am unable to do so. Please help.
Hmm, this sounds interesting. What seems to be happening instead?
Many thanks.

Hi, nothing lol 😂 that’s why I’m stuck when it comes to cropping a picture. Usually you can just click and drag the corners and sides to adjust and crop the pic. So since I couldn’t figure out how to do this in the blog draft and document itself I’m just going to crop the photos once I upload it to my media files for WP. I will admit there are times when I don’t like the block editor that much.

Very strange!
Can you tell me what browser and if any, what browser extensions are in place please?

Yea, I use chrome, Safari or Microsoft Edge. I wish there was a way I could share a screenshot

Hi, sorry I couldn’t take the screenshot using this app. Is there any other way I can send it? I have taken a picture of my laptop screen but there is no option to attach it here…
Thanks,

If that didn’t work for you, we have a few more options at https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/

I think for now I will put this issue on hold because I can’t seem to figure it out and I will just crop the pictures I upload before I put them in my blog post. I wish there was a simple option to attach a picture to this help / support thread…
I do appreciate the help though. Thank you.

I think what the original poster is describing is actually the intended behaviour (intended by WordPress, not by users ;) )
This is what’s happening for me, and based on their description, I think it’s the same as what the original poster experienced:
http://recordit.co/hy1JkhCcjWClicking Crop does not actually give you a crop tool. The grid lines appear but you cannot click and drag them to select an area. You actually have to go to Aspect Ratio to get any kind of select tool.
If this is not the intended behaviour, @aleone89 could you maybe share a screencast of the crop feature as you experience it?
Otherwise it seems to be a UI issue of using a Crop icon when there isn’t actually a crop function 😬
Thanks!

Hi @lucybeer thanks for sharing the recording! That definitely helps illustrate what @simplysophieandbooks was reporting.
I found out that the crop tool in the Image Block works a little differently. According to the WordPress.org support article about the Image block here (which has some gifs that you can see), unlike traditional crop tools on other image editors, on the block editor, you need to either select a different aspect ratio or use the zoom option (the magnifying glass icon) to zoom into the image and then move it around.
I understand it’s a little different from what most crop tools on other image editing programs work. But I hope the screenshots there are helpful.
Note that the reason I looked up that article on the WordPress.org site is that WordPress.org is where the software comes from. So there are some “core” features that are built into the WordPress software. On WordPress.com, we add on to the core WordPress features so there are more features available for WordPress.com users. However, certain features, like how the “crop” tool works, come from the core WordPress.org software, so they work the same across all sites using WordPress.
Hope that helps!
