I need my FTP/SFTP credentials

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

I would like to get my FTP/SFTP credentials. I have deleted all my emails so I don’t have any information.

How could I get that info?

    Thank you!

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure I understand your question. Can you clarify why you are needing FTP access? That is an option for sites that have upgraded to our Business Plan, but for free sites like bachirkayali.wordpress.com we do not offer FTP as an option.

You are inquiring about another site instead?

    Thanks for the additional info!

    Hi!
I bought a hosting outside WordPress and in order to move my site there, they requested me those credentials.
Otherwise they can not transfer my site to my new hosting.

    Hope I could explain myself.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

What’s the address of the site you’re trying to transfer? The site you have on our platform (bachirkayali.wordpress.com) has no content on it.

That’s exactly the address of the site. And it has content although a little poor :-)

  • Hi there,

A WordPress.com site like bachirkayali.wordpress.com cannot be transferred via FTP/SFTP as your new host instructed you. WordPress.com uses a modified version of the open source WordPress software, which isn’t compatible with the hosting you’re moving to, so it’s not possible to transfer your entire site as-is.

You can only export your site’s content via a standard WordPress export file:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/export/

At your new host, instead of uploading a full site via FTP, you’ll need to install a new copy of the WordPress software. Once that’s installed, log into WP-Admin, go to Tools ->Import, and then you can use the WordPress importer plugin there to import the file you exported from our end.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

    Hi!

    I’m sorry but I don’t really understand.

What’s special in my site that can’t be transferred? Which sites (do) can be transferred?

How do you know it’s not compatible with the hosting I’m moving it to if I haven’t mentioned it?

If I do that of the “export”, would my site look exactly the same as the original?

These are questions just to understand it better.

    Thank you.

  • Do you mind sharing why you’d like to move to another host? Is there something specific you can do at the other host that you feel you’re not able to do if you continue hosting your site with us?

How do you know it’s not compatible with the hosting I’m moving it to if I haven’t mentioned it?

The version of WordPress that we use on WordPress.com has been specifically modified by us to work on our hosting infrastructure. Additionally your site doesn’t exist as a stand-alone WordPress installation. WordPress.com is one massive multisite network comprising of thousands of sites, with a custom account management system, several features that are completely unique to WordPress.com, and a custom dashboard that doesn’t exist in the core WordPress software itself.

The version of WordPress that we use on WordPress.com can’t be installed at any other hosting provider, and we don’t have an option to do a full-site migration from WordPress.com to another host, or to do a complete download of all your site’s files.

If I do that of the “export”, would my site look exactly the same as the original?

Only your site’s content can be exported, not the theme, settings or customizations. In other words, only your posts, pages, comments and media files.

You can continue using the same theme you’re using here: All WordPress.com themes have a self-hosted version which you can download from the theme’s page in the theme showcase. But any customizations you’ve made to the theme on our end you’ll have to manually copy over to the new site.

For the Blank Canvas theme you’re currently using, you can find the download button for the self-hosted version of the theme at the bottom of the page at https://wordpress.com/theme/blank-canvas-blocks. Note that you’ll need to download and install both Blank Canvas and Blockbase, but Blank Canvas is the one you’ll activate.

Also note that even if you use the same theme, some WordPress.com-specific features won’t be available on the new site. You can add some WordPress.com-specific features back by installing the Jetpack plugin. You can also move your subscribers and stats over to the new site via Jetpack. But it won’t look and behave exactly the same as your site with us.

Wow, this is much more complex than I thought it would. And my site has still not even started, as it were…

It’s not that I’m comparing differences between who’s hosting my site. It’s that I paid a hosting somewhere else and I would like to transfer my site there, regardless of the amount of content in it.

What if I wanted to switch again to one of your paid hostings? Same thing happens?

Now I wonder how people change their hosting withouth having to solve things manually once their sites are up and running.

    I’m a little surprised. That’s all.

  • Hi,

This is another resource that may assist you in moving to another host:

That is a different sort of thing and would not run into the same issues. We would just change your account to reflect your plan purchase and that would “unlock” (for lack of a better term) the additional features of that plan.
