Hi, I am very new to wordpress, I registered my domain name as ‘danielcameronentertainment’ but I was hoping to change it to ‘danielcameron.entertainment’ ( just adding the DOT)I have been reading the support pages but unable to carry this out, do I need to delete my current account and re-regerster all again?
Or have done it by just by changing ” my sites address though the blog tool”? and will people already see =danielcameron.entertainment?
    Regards

I’m afraid it’s not actually possible for you to have the domain danielcameron.entertainment.wordpress.com.

Adding the period to a web address creates what is called a “subdomain” which has a very specific impact on how a website is organized. You can read a little more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdomain.

I can try to get a little further into the specifics if you’d like, but the short answer is there is no way to add and extra period to your existing WordPress.com domain.

Hi Liz thanks so much for your help!
I hope you don’t mind me asking but I was also thinking about trying to move my website over to the wordpress.org so I can add plugins etc.
Will I need to have my own hosting to use the .org? I am currently just using a free template on wordpress.com. I am very new to this but really enjoying working out the best for my project. Thanks!

@danielcameronentertainment it’s no problem to move to a .org site. You would have to get your own hosting, and many (but not all) of the free themes available on WordPress.com are also available for self hosted sites. Here’s more info on how to move: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

Note that even with a .org blog you wouldn’t be able to have the domain name danielcameron.entertainment.com as in order to do that you’d nave to own the domain entertainment.com which is taken.

@ dawitgrmay you actually have a different issue–what you need is to change your blog’s address while keeping it on WordPress.com. Here’s information on how to do that: http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Let me know if you have any trouble with that.

it helps, thank you Liz! still the old one exists how could i permanently delete it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Here’s how to delete the old site: http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

Keep in mind, deleting a site is permanent and absolutely irreversible so only do it if you are completely sure you are deleting the right site and absolutely sure you are never going to want to use that url again. Many people keep sites they no longer need as test sites so they can experiment with different themes and features of WordPress without impacting their public site. I highly recommend that path.
