I need to edit the A record for the sub domain I have bought

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I have bought self-hosting over at Go Daddy to move my blog across but was told I had to buy a sub domain over on Automattic if I wanted to keep my blog (www.thepeoplesperson.com) up at the same time as making my new site.

So I have bought the domain mapping upgrade and I want to change the A record, so that the sub domain points towards the Go Daddy hosting but my primary domain still stays on wordpress as it is.

Can you help me do this please?

97.74.47.128 – This is the IP of the place I want my sub domain (http://new.thepeoplesperson.com) to point towards.

Please reply as soon as possible.

    Regards,

  • You should only need to establish a CNAME record which points back to GoDaddy.

You can set this in your Custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

For the exact record, please contact GoDaddy.

    Macmanx,

In the DNS panel, I can edit the DNS for my primary domain but the option doesn’t exist for my sub domain.

    How can I do it?

  • Well, the subdomain you have to actually create via a CNAME record. You’ll need to get those from GoDaddy so you have what you need to put down.

So do I need the mapping upgrade from wordpress or should I get that refunded (bought 3 years ago) ?

Sorry about this mate, I have spent all today and yesterday trying to figure it out and I am normally tech savvy but this is over my head.

Should I go to Go Daddy and ask them to create a sub domain via a CNAME record then? They have told me I would have to talk to Automattic and get them to create the sub domain.

Thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated.

  • You do need mapping for thepeoplesperson.com if you want to direct that to your blog here.

You don’t need mapping for the subdomain, since you’re directing that elsewhere. You just need to create and direct the subdomain via a CNAME record in your Custom DNS panel.

    Mac,

I have set everything up with Godaddy now and they have informed me that all I have to do is update the DNS through the WordPress panel.

However, when I go do Settings > Domains, the only domain I can edit is my primary (www.thepeoplesperson.com)

There is no “edit dns” option next to new.thepeoplesperson.com. So how can I change the dns for it?

    Sam

  • Yes, it’s a subdomain, so it doesn’t have its own DNS. You need to edit the DNS for thepeoplesperson.com which involves creating the CNAME for the subdomain, which you can get from GoDaddy.

    Mac,

I switched the nameservers to Go Daddy and I then had DNS access through the Automattic hosting panel.

I added an A host record for ‘new.thepeoplesperson.com’ and directed it to 97.74.47.128.

I then re-directed the namservers back to WordPress and 40 minutes later we had success. Thepeoplesperson.com was up and running at the same time as new.thepeoplesperson.com directed me to my new blog.

However, now both of them are going back to thepeoplesperson.com and I again do not have any access to the new blog.

Why did it work for a period and then change? This is extremely frustrating.

If it involves creating a CNAME, can you guide me through it please so I know I am doing it right?

Once again, thank you for the help.

    Sam

  • Yes, the DNS changes need to be made where the nameservers are pointing.

So, you need to direct the nameservers to us, then add the CNAME record via our DNS panel.

You need to get the CNAME record from GoDaddy.

I cannot do this Mac, this is the problem.

The nameservers are pointing towards wordpress (ns1 and ns2 wordpress) but the DNS Panel is telling me :

    DNS Manager
    DNS Manager: Not hosted here

I cannot add the CNAME record in the DNS panel because it doesn’t allow me to, the option doesn’t exist.

Go Daddy has told me that they cannot do anything as the name servers are not pointed towards them, so they have no control over it.

  • You need to point the nameservers to us, then add the CNAME via our DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

Mac, what are the nameservers I need to point it? NS1 + NS2 wordpress? They are already pointing towards there.

However, I cannot change the DNS on the control panel.

  • Those are the correct nameservers.

Are you able to access the panel http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/ ?

If so, what sort of trouble are you running into? Do you see any errors?

I have finally got it working Mac.

Much appreciated for all your responses.
