Good Morning!
There are 2 different versions of WordPress. The answer depends on which version you plan to use.
Here, at WordPress.com you do not need to use hosting. Rather, you’ll just need to map the domain from Go Daddy to this account. Here are the instructions to complete that process: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
If you’re planning to use the self hosted version of WordPress, then you would need to also carry a hosting plan. This version of WordPress is much more hands on. I recommend reading over the Getting Started materials at wordpress.org/support/
This guide outlines some of the major differences between WordPress.com here and the self hosted version: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
I’ll be happy to answer any follow up questions.

Thanks so much for your message.
I don’t think I am self-hosted…
I have mapped the wordpress URL to my Go Daddy account. But when I go to my website it just has a blank theme – no content appears. And the website address in the address bar changes from my bought one to one with “site.wordpress.com” after it, or sometimes “com.wordpress.com” after it?!
I haven’t paid anything to WordPress. Do I need to buy their £30 a year package to have a website? This fee seems to include the domain name, which I already just bought a few days ago from Go Daddy… Do I try and un-buy it from Go Daddy?!
So sorry for all the ineptitude, any help would be more than welcome! Thanks so much!

I see that you have 4 similarly titled free sites on this WordPress.com account. These are the sites that end in .wordpress.com. You can see those when you login, click on My Sites in the upper left corner. At this time, there has not been any custom domains mapped to any of these sites.
What is the custom domain URL that you’re trying to map? This is the domain that ends in .com, .net, .org, etc…

Hi! Thanks :-)
The domain I bought from Go Daddy was http://www.fetchthegin.com
I went to Go Daddy and mapped what I thought was my WordPress URL.
If I go to the Domain section of WordPress is says nothing is mapped however. And if I try to add a mapping it tries to charge me £85… -
Hi there – I think there is a site redirect setup through GoDaddy.
The domain mapping process will need to be initiated from your WordPress.com account.
To get started, check out our WordPress.com plans at https://wordpress.com/pricing/ you are going to need one of these in order to map the domain to your account. The personal plan for $35.88 / year will do the trick.
These are the mapping instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
Let me know if you run into any trouble with this!
