I need to know if I can add Simple Custom CSS to my website.
-
I am not an IT guru, but I have been creating my new website and making great progress. I have hit a road block. I need to add some css so my images will stay left justified, and not stack end to end off to the right. My daughter told me to type in the command, style=”clear:left” and that fixes it, but it is erased as soon as I go back to visual mode.
Is adding this plug in something I can do as a novice?
Do I need to upgrade to allow plug ins?
I can not reach the two people who could possibly help me with this and am dead in the water.
Thanks in advance.

Hello there,
See here please > http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#alignment
The alignment icons in the WordPress editor are for aligning text; they are not for aligning images. They are used to achieve wrapping text around images on either the right or left hand side, or to display an image that’s centered without text on either side of it.
Align-left means position left, with the rest of the content wrapping around the right side of the image.
Align-right means position right, with the rest of the content wrapping around the left side of the image.
Align-center means position center, with no wrap-around (= the rest of the content below the image).
If the text beside the images does not occupy the same amount of space that the image beside it does then the text wrapping will continue and the images and text that follow will have a staggered appearance.
To prevent the staggered effect what you do is insert the following snippet of code into the Text (HTML) editor after each image/text pair:
<div style="clear:both;"></div> -
What I posted above does not require an upgrade of any kind.

Blogger installed plugin capability does not exist on WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality. You are confusing WordPress.ORG and WordPress.COM. For that type of functionality you’d need a self-hosted site running on a paid web hosting service.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/We provide support here only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs. We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ Get hosting here http://wordpress.ORG/hosting/

Wow you just blew my mind. I don’t understand every third word… I purchased my domain, lynxmicrotech.com. from godaddy with their website builder and after many long hours I just gave up. That was a year ago. I finally healed my bruised ego and decided to try again. I was told to go to wordpress, and my kid setup what I turned into what it is now. When I have it finished I want to have it hosted, to remove the wordpress part of the url. Where should I be asking questions for my website? I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or disrespectful, but I really have no clue, and am lost.

This is how to do what you want to do on any blog hosted by wordpress.COM https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/i-need-to-know-if-i-can-add-simple-custom-css-to-my-website?replies=5#post-2475557 and it does not require any CSS editing at all.

http://lynxmicrotech.com/ is not hosted by wordpress.COM and we do not provide support for it.

I’m not entirely sure you understand my problem. I’m not entirely sure this is the right forum to even discuss it. If you click on this link it will show you what the problem is.
I have gone in and left justified the pictures, but I can’t make the next picture go to the next line. I need to make each picture show on the left and each picture needs text to be aligned with the top. I have looked at the info you pointed me to, but I’m not sure how to make it do what I want. Thank you.

Well I tried it and it did work. I thought it would be the same as when I put in the style=”clear:left” in the image tag, where it would work, but not be saved. This does not go away. Sorry for the attitude. Thank you for your help.

I mean this. <div style=”clear:both;”></div> it appears to have solved my problem. Thank you.

Hi Timethief, Last question I promise! If you click here you will see I have the images lined up and the text is behaving, but I can’t get the pictures to have a space between them. Do you have another trick up your sleeve?
PS I found we will be moving the site to bluehost/wordpress.

If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages in a wordpress.COM blog see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
If you use the classic editor here Dashboard > Posts > Add New to create your posts what I provide below may be helpful.
In the classic editor, if you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph. If you are working in the Text or HTML editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.
Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”IMPORTANT NOTE: When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.
