I need to register with wordpress to get an api key for my own domain
-
Hey guys, I have my own domain, and my own hosting providers, but I am using the wordpress blog for my layout. Now, I wanted to install the plugin: akismet, but it says I need an API Key. Then Word Press said I have to register with them, before I can get an API key. I went an registered myself a username, but how do I register my blog domain? I don’t want to host with word press, as I already am hosting with someone else. I just want to get my API to activate askimet. Thanks.

You just did register an account. That’s all you need. While logged in you should be able to get your key here:
http://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/profile.php
also for reference: FAQ
I have to ask though and I don’t mean to be insulting but this is linked to in the FAQ blog up there and a search of the forums for akismet api key would have found it. We’re trying to make the forums earier to use here and just wondering what you did to find this answer if anything before posting.
thanks,

Alright, Yeah I got it. But now I am entering the API key into the akismet section, and it’s saying this:
“The key you entered could not be verified because a connection to akismet.com could not be established. Please check your server configuration.”I don’t understand what that means?

Get with your host as either they have the php function fopen turned off or they don’t allow or have firewalled port 80 for outbound traffic. Search for previous threads in case you’re interested.
And please the second half of my post there as again, I’m curious and it’s something we’ve been discussing lately around here.

I searched up api key and then when I checked my email I found it, but it still didn’t fix the problem. That’s why I had to ask, and then modify my question with giving you hints of what was going on. Thanks though, I guess I can’t use the plugin.

Hey DRMike,
Can the WordPress API be used severla times for my several blogs or can it only be used once?

It is best to not direct questions at specific people. I am pretty sure that staff don’t mind you using the API key for a few blogs if they are for personal use. As for several (many, many blogs), you might want to contact them about it for a specific answer through the “support” tab in this forum!

I have tangent topic question that I haven’t been able to figure out. I too have my own domain and hosting and installed wordpress via MySQL database. When I installed it, it automatically set up my name and pass to match my existing site, but I didn’t get an API Key. Nor does it exist in my user profile. That username didnt work when I tried to log in to post here, so I had to create a second.
I just can’t figure out how I’m supposed to get my API Key (to install the stats plugin). Tips?

While logged in as “comicfoundry” in this forum, head over to:
http://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/profile.php
That is where you will find the API key needed for your blog hosted elsewhere. What is confusing to people is that you need a wordpress.com account to have an API. That account doesn’t need to be the same name or password as you blog hosted elsewhere. It just needs to exist to get the API key.
