I need to restore DNS settings to "stock"

  • Unknown's avatar

I need to restore DNS settings to those that are original. I have accidently deleted the original when I tried adding custom settings and the site no longer works. Can you please restore these to the original DNS settings for both my free wordpress domain and the domain I have mapped to my site.

(or remove the mapping of the domain I have added and just have the free wordpress one)

    Thanks

    Hi there!

I can definitely help you with your DNS settings, but I’d like to first clarify exactly what you’re looking to do. Are you trying to have your domain nourishtohealth.com.au reflect your content on nourishtohealth.wordpress.com? If so, you’ll need to change the name servers at your domain registrar following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers

If not, please explain a bit more about what you’re looking for, and I’ll be happy to help!

Yeh what I’m trying to do, is add my domain – which I have; nourishtohealth.com.au.

And then I changed the nameservers; but I also needed to change the MX record to: mail.nourishtohealth.com.au and the Mail A, so that my email would still be working through my host – which I did. But in the process I think I deleted some of the other original DNS settings by mistake which I think is causing issues?

    So is it possible to:
    1. remove the custom domain: nourishtohealth.com.au (and then I’ll re add it without stuffing it up this time – woops)
    2. and also restore the nourishtohealth.wordpress.com to the original wordpress DNS settings (without any custom DNS settings)

I think this would be easiest because I think I removed some of the default wordpress DNS settings, and then I can start from scratch!!

Because I want to add my custom domain (update the DNS settings – to enable email to remain through my host), make the custom domain my primary domain (so that the URL is nourishtohealth.com.au).

    Hope this makes sense…

Ok, so I’ve changed my nameservers for my host domain back to their original ns1.syrahost.com ns2.syrahost.com.

So can you please remove the custom domain: nourishtohealth.com.au

and restore the nourishtohealth.wordpress.com domain to its original wordpress DNS settings?

    Thanks for your help!

Then I will link my custom domain back at a later date.

…I think I have fixed it!

One question though. Do I need to update the MX and Mail A record for both domains? Or just the nourishtohealth.wordpress.com domain? or just the custom domain?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Thanks for the additional information! Just to clarify, there are several default DNS records built into your domain when it’s mapped to WordPress.com. For example, we automatically include a record that points the www version of your domain back to the non-www version (so, http://www.nourishtohealth.com.au to nourishtohealth.com.au). It’s not possible for you to remove those at WordPress.com so you don’t have to worry about that.

Going forward, I don’t think we need to remove the domain from your account in this case. It looks like you’ve added an MX and A record to your domain. You can see them by clicking Edit Domain -> Edit DNS here:

    https://nourishtohealth.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

To your question about adding DNS records to both domains or just one, you can only add records to nourishtohealth.com.au, not nourishtohealth.wordpress.com. The latter is a subdomain of WordPress.com so you would need to have access to the WordPress.com domain to add records. You’ll just want to add records to nourishtohealth.com.au, which you have.

Can you take a look at the records following the path mentioned above and let me know if those are correct?

The last step would be to change your name servers to point to WordPress.com!
