I need to take over my team's old website.
-
I am a member of a robotics team and, a few years before I joined, someone created a wordpress.com website for our team. Unfortunately this person also took the login with him when he left. We are worried that this old website will cause confusion and keep people away from our real website which is a self-hosted WordPress site. Any help in finding a way to either take over or take down this website would be greatly appreciated!

The best option is to get in contact with the owner of the website and ask him to transfer ownership to you. Only the user registered as owner of a site can delete it or request staff to do so. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-wordpress-com-user-or-account
Failing that, you can try submitting the Account Recovery Form, but unless you have some type of proof of ownership for that blog I doubt that it will be effective. Staff won’t transfer ownership to you simply based on your word, nor will they supply you with contact information on the current owner. More information here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/#account-recovery-form

While I doubt the first solution will be possible, I’m going to try the latter. However I do have proof that I am (a. part of the team, and (b. my team exists as part of FIRST and FRC (http://usfirst.org/). Would they except various forms of proof from FIRST as enough to transfer ownership or should I start exploring taking it down via a copyright claim.

Just provide as much information as you can on the recovery form and staff will then contact you via email to discuss your options, including what proof would be sufficient. I can’t really advise you beyond what is contained in the support document.
