I need to type math formulas in wordpress.com
-
I need to be able to type math formulas in wordpress.com. So far, it just totally messes up fractions, which, if entered on a blank html page, would render just fine. (Example: http://www.RoofRinseRun.com/how-to-measure-for-a-re-roof.html renders the equations perfectly [and so does roofrinserun.blogspot.com]; but roofrinserun.wordpress.com totally messes them up). One really annoying thing is that WordPress puts a line break after a fraction div tag that is set up (via CSS, which I paid $30 to get that functionality on wordpress, but it was free on blogger.com) to be display:inline-block, where it all is supposed to stay on one line.

Hi there,
The best way to render formulas is to use LaTeX, as described here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/latex/Let me know how that works for you!

Thanks for the help! That’s what I did, and it worked great. Only thing was, if the equation was quite long, it shrinks it down to like a crazy tiny tiny size that you can’t really read and then also clips off the bottom edge of the numbers/letters (on desktop version), but all-in-all, it’s a workable solution. Thanks again.

Hmm. Next time you see that, try cutting out your relevant CSS and previewing, just to make sure that’s not affecting it, and if that makes no difference, please link me to where I can see the example. :)

I think I’ve got it worked out well enough. Two of the smallest equations I just added “&s=4” to require that they be the largest possible size. Oddly enough, the letters/numbers are not clipped off at the bottom like they were yesterday. I do have access to add new CSS, and even to delete WordPress’s stock CSS, but apparently I have no way of seeing WordPress’s stock CSS and/or modifying it. Anyway, if you want to see the site, it’s the only post at roofrinserun.wordpress.com. Thanks so much for the help – I was pleasantly surprised to find that someone answered my question – much appreciated!

You’re very welcome!
To see the existing CSS, we recommend using browser tools, such as Firebug. The CSS you add through the customizer modifies the existing theme’s CSS, so the best way to work on it is to inspect element for what you want to target. We have a bit more information about this here:
