I needed to restart Chrome due to an update, and the Save feature didn’t work

    Hi there,

I updated Chrome a few minutes ago, which required a restart. I’d been working on a short story, and clicked Save, and I saw that the changes had been saved. I went ahead with the restart, and once all my tabs reopened, I noticed a was missing a few thousand words from my story. Going into the versions, it’s showing that my last version saved was from two days ago, which is odd because I was working on the story last night.

Is there any other spot where I can see past versions? I’m really hoping that I’m able to rescue those few thousand words and not have to start over.

    Thanks,
    Nick

Update: I guess the saved version wasn’t added to the repository of changes quite yet? Despite having refreshed the page a few times earlier, when I navigated to my draft a moment ago, I saw, “this version doesn’t match your most recent one” or something along those lines, so I clicked it and it took me to the most recent version. Wheew!

  • Hi Nick,

It sounds like you’re all sorted? If not, please let us know.

Just a general observation here: when working on very long posts, and especially if you step away from your computer for extended periods while leaving your browser tab open on the editor, autosave sometimes stops working reliably. So perhaps if you know you won’t be back for a while, save the draft and close the browser tab (if it hadn’t saved correctly it will show you a warning at that point), then reload the editor in a fresh session once you’re back. That should prevent autosave failures like this for the most part.

Personally, if working on something long-form, like a short story, I prefer using a text editor or word processor (or in my case Scrivener) on my computer, so I know it’s being saved directly to my hard drive and doesn’t rely on a browser cache or network connection (both of which can be temperamental at times) for my work to be saved. Then I just copy to the editor and do formatting and last-minute corrections online.

I also prefer to have a local copy of something like that (I’ve yet to embrace The Cloud™ 😉)
