i only want excerpts to show – NOT the whole post

I’m trying to create a new site (it currently just has tester info on it) but I’d like to only have the main page show excerpts of each post – that way people only have to read the full story if they want to click to see more. I see when creating a new post there is a place to write the excerpt, yet it’s still just showing up as the full post. anyone know how to fix it??

You could use the more tag. Which splits the post.

thanks, i’ve been checking out that option – but I was hoping to use just an excerpt so i can sum up more stories for those who want a short and sweet update. I see that it’s a possibility…i’m wondering if the theme i chose is creating the problem?? is that even possible?
