I own a domain registered elsewhere. I want it to be registered by wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

The reason for this is: The domain was expensive because it contains the most common search words for my business: “psykolog Oslo” (I am a psychologist in private praxis in Oslo). When people search “psykolog Oslo” in Google (which most of them do when they search for a psychologist in Oslo), I want Google to find the domain that I bought (psykologioslo.com) and put it high up on the hit list (which I believe it will). I have a blog now registered with WordPress with the domain name psykologkarlbang.com. I want to keep the same blog, but have it placed under the domain name psykologioslo.com, which is now registered with domeneshop.no. Just having domenshop.no redirect psykologioslo.com to psykologkarlbang.com (as it functions now) does not let me have the value of the domain name: to get high up on Google’s hit list for “psykolog Oslo”.

Unfortunately psykologioslo.com is now registered with domeneshop.no, that was probably the mistake I made in the first place: I had domeneshop.no register my new domain, because it was via their site that I bought it. I probably should have had wordpress.com register it.

So that is probably what I should do now: deregister psykologioslo.com from domeneshop.no and have wordpress.com register it. If this is correct, how do I then proceeed? If it is not correct, how do I proceed to have my wordpress blog function with the domain name psykologioslo.com as described in the first paragraph of this mail?

    Kind regards
    Karl Bang

    Hi there,

We do not currently accept incoming domain transfers. I would suggest mapping the domain psykologioslo.com to your current WordPress.com blog and then setting psykologioslo.com as your primary domain. By doing that psykologioslo.com will be your primary domain and all of the other URLs will direct to that domain.

You can read more about that process in this document:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I have now found out how to change the nameservers with domeneshop.no, where my domain psykologioslo.com now is registered. Doing it, I got this message: (Navnetjeneren ns1.wordpress.com svarer ikke autoritativt på oppslag for sonen psykologioslo.com.) The nameserver ns1.wordpress.com does not answer authoritatively to (oppslag=searches?) for the zone psykologioslo.com. If you do this change the domain will stop functioning until the error is corrected (or something like that, I do not remember the exact worda). Do you still want to make the changes?” I pressed yes.

Then I got the message: “(Navnetjenerne er endret

Navnetjenerendringen er lagret hos VeriSign GRS, og vil begynne å bli synlig neste gang .com-sonen oppdateres. Etter dette kan det ta ytterligere 24 timer før endringen er synlig alle steder på nettet.)

The nameservers have been changed. The nameserver change is stored with VeriSign GRS, og will start to become visible next time the .com-zone is updated. After this it may take another 24 hours till the changes are visible all places on the internet.”

    HI there!

It looks like the name servers for psykologioslo.com are mapped to the WordPress.com name servers:

    http://whois.net/whois/psykologioslo.com

So you’re almost there! Now you just need to go into your site and map the domain. To do this:

    1. Go into Store >> Domain in your dashboard

    2. Enter the domain in the form at the top of the page

    3. Click the Add domain to blog button

    After the purchase is complete:

    1. Got to Store >> Domains

    2. Select the radio button next to the domain psykologioslo.com

    3. Click Update Primary Domain

This will make psykologioslo.com your primary domain and all other domains will forward there. You can read more about this process here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

Once you finish mapping the domain you’ll be good to go!

Please let me know if I can assist you with anything further.

It now works in one way: the name of the domain is now psykologioslo.com, and it is the primary domain for my blog.

In another way, which was the primary reason why I purchased this very expensive domain name, it does not work: When people search for a psychologist in Oslo, most of them search “psykolog Oslo” in Google. So my domain name should get me high up on the hit list for that search, but it doesn’t. Do you have any explanation for that?

    Best, Karl

    Hi Karl,

I completely understand your frustration. It can take Google and other search engines 4-6 weeks to add new sites, which might be why you are not seeing it just yet. One thing that might help is for you to verify the primary domain. All of the Website Verification Services can be accessed via Tools >> Available Tools in your dashboard, and this document will give you the details you need to verify with Google and Bing:
