I picked 'blog' – should I have picked 'website'

    Hello (forgive me, I’m a real novice…!),

I’ve been collating bits and pieces of architectural research, and last week I started the process of getting it online (two pieces uploaded so far)… dynamicstasis.blog

At the start I selected ‘blog’ as opposed to ‘website’, and now I’m having second thoughts. If possible I’d like to have a ‘home’ / ‘about’ page which sets out the intentions / purpose of the site, and then I’d like to split the content on the site between ‘observations’ (essays, photo-essays, drawing / building studies) and ‘propositions’ (theoretical positions, proposed projects etc).

Q1. Would it be better to have set the site up as a ‘website’ rather than a ‘blog’?

Q2. Is it possible to change now?

Thanks so much in advance if you can help me out!

    Hi,

Q1. Would it be better to have set the site up as a ‘website’ rather than a ‘blog’?

It doesn’t really matter much, because you can switch from one to the other at any time.

If possible I’d like to have a ‘home’ / ‘about’ page which sets out the intentions / purpose of the site

At Customize > Static Front Page > Front page displays, choose “A static page,” then select a page from the menu labeled “Front Page.” I’d advise that you also assign another page as your posts page with the second menu at the same location, which is labeled “Posts page.”

and then I’d like to split the content on the site between ‘observations’ (essays, photo-essays, drawing / building studies) and ‘propositions’ (theoretical positions, proposed projects etc).

Arranging menu items corresponding to such categories and subcategories may most easily be accomplished with a custom menu. If the content to be linked to in the menus will include posts, then a custom menu will be necessary. You might also find it advantageous to use category pages. See the following relevant support pages:

Regarding creating sub-menus in a custom menu, see the Changing the Order & Creating Sub-Menus section of the Custom Menus support page.

Thanks again for your help. I just thought of another question if that’s alright…

Is it possible to save a customised design, so that I can revert to it if it remains better than a redesigned alternative version?

    Thanks!

Some alternate features can be saved for potential later use. For example, you may save any number of unused menus and widgets, the latter by placing them in the inactive widgets section of the widgets page. However, it’s not possible to save alternate arrangements of a site, like taking snapshots of Arrangements A, B, C, etc., that you can revert back to later.

Your support is great as always and it’s good to have you back again. I posted the link because I wasn’t sure if you knew about it. That’s all.

    @jbdynamicstasis,

any number of unused menus and widgets

I might have also mentioned the following:

    • You may try as many different themes as you like from the available WordPress.com themes, https://wordpress.com/themes. However, see the Switch Themes section of the Themes support page regarding features and items that might require relocation or replacement after a switch.
    • On most themes at least, numerous custom header images may be saved at Customize > Header Image for potential later use.
    • You may save hundreds, perhaps thousands (depending upon the available storage space) of images in the media library for potential later use anywhere on the site.
    • Any content type (post, page, portfolio project, testimonial) may be saved indefinitely in draft status.
