I REALLY want to buy the domain mapping upgrade but…

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t find out where to pay for it! Sorry if I’m missing something basic here, I click the Upgrades button from my Dashboard and I get a page that lists upgrades from Custom CSS to Video Press. I click Domains and there is nowhere to PAY for that upgrade. I fill in my website in the field, and the next page says, “Domain mapping is available for 9.97 credits per domain per year, registration not included. You have 0 credits. You will have to purchase additional credits via PayPal.” How exactly do I do that?

    Thanks for the help.

    1) are we talking about a blog on wordpress.com? The link in your user name is not a wordpress.com blog.
    2) If it says 9.97 that means you are adding a domain name (something.com or whatever) that is already registered, am I right?
    3) Have you set the name servers as per these instructions?
4)If that is done, then there should be a “Click here to buy credits”-link. If not, then something is missing in the steps above.

Thanks wpvstp. Yes, its a WordPress blog, here:

    http://richmondmedia.wordpress.com/

I saw the name server change part, but I don’t understand it. It’s hosted by Godaddy and right now the DNS is “ns01.domaincontrol.com ns02.domaincontrol.com”, and I was afraid to change that.

I don’t want to give the entire site to the blog, I want it to end up as http://www.richmondmedia.com/blog.html or something like that. The site is a web design company, and I’ve been told that incorporating the blog under our server will help with SEO.

Thanks for the response, I hope I’ve explained my confusion… I’m just a poor Dreamweaver WYSIWYG designer…

You cannot map richmondmedia.wordpress.com to http://www.richmondmedia.com/blog/, but you can map richmondmedia.wordpress.com to blog.richmondmedia.com.

In order to to that you need to change the CNAME record at GoDaddy, making the blog in blog.richmondmedia.com point to richmondmedia.wordpress.com. I’ve done this for some of my sites/blogs, but not with GoDaddy, so I’m not sure how to do that with GoDaddy.

If you’re used to working with Deamweaver, remember that there’s no FTP access to wordpress.com. You must log in and do everything from your dashboard. Unless you use a tool like Windows Live Writer or similar…

@wpvstp, if they map to a subdomain, will they lose their ability to have email on their main domain name? The domain mapping support document isn’t completely clear on that.

Q: I have mail for domain.com that I want to keep using. If I change my nameservers, will this stop working?

NOTE: You can use Google Apps to obtain custom e-mail accounts on your mapped domain.

A: Yes, it will. If you have mail or other DNS records that you need to maintain for domain.com, you cannot currently add those here. This probably means domain mapping of domain.com is not an option for you unless you are willing to give up email on domain.com. You can still map a subdomain of domain.com and maintain this functionality, so read on! Outside DNS records may be available in the future, so stay tuned.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try, I guess I can check out Go Daddy’s help system if I need to.

    I appreciate the help!

    @tsp
Thx, I didn’t think about that…I’m using Google Apps anyway.
But if I read the instructions correctly, as long as you are only mapping the subdomain blog as in blog.domain.com you should be fine, right?

I’m not sure. Perhaps it’s time for a note to staff on that to clarify. I just sent the question into support.

OK, clarification from Anthony at support:

They would need to set up the e-mail addresses over with their current registrar/DNS providers (not WordPress.com). If they are only mapping a sub-domain to their blog, their nameservers will remain at their current provider. This means that they will need to set up e-mail with them so that any MX records are properly created. The subdomain mapping should not interfere with any mail records set up on the top-level domain.
