I received a death threat via comment

Well…it wasn’t me, but my fiance received a death threat via comment today on her WordPress blog. A very serious one that described, in detail, how this person wanted to kill her.
We’re not sure what the next steps should be. If anybody here or at WordPress can assist, we’d gladly take any advice we can on the matter as this is a very serious situation.

If you feel it’s credible, contact your local authorities.
If they feel it’s credible, they can subpoena records that WP might have available.

notawoodpecker, the only problem with that is we’re in Canada and the IP address appears to come from New York (Albany or Saratoga Springs, from what I can figure). It’d be pretty difficult to get any kind of resolution via authorities as they’d probably just brush it off…although after reading it, it’s something I’m seriously considering for her to do.
And unfortunately, timethief, it doesn’t appear to be a WordPress user who left the comment…so we can’t really report them to the “abuse” or “disputes” section.

I stronly encourage you not to discuss such matters on a public forum that’s indexed by Google and is accessible to everyone on the internet. It matters not what notawoordpreccker thinks.
It matters not what I think and I am a Canadian paralegal.
We are Volunteers and our role is not one of baiting people and drawing them into such conversations which may indeed be to their detriment.
What matters is you taking the required action and not stating your case in forum threads. -

I have no idea what you’re talking about. I was simply answering the post that notawoodpecker made. I’m not trying to “bait” anybody into anything, nor am I trying to “state my case”. I’m trying to get advice on what to do after my fiance got her life threatened in a comment.

Sigh…I can see just how intelligent of a decision it was to come to these forums for help. I’ll just go rob a bank so I can hire a lawyer to look up an IP address.

I was not directing any animosity towards you. I apologize if it sounded like I was. I was advising your that this support forum is not an appropriate place to discuss what has happened.

The best advice is to follow the links above and also go to law enforcement. I’ve had New Zealand cops call on someone for a far lesser offence.
