I ruined my entire site by editing a php file

I downloaded a new theme and was editing a functions.php file (I’m new to editing and now obviously realize I should not have done that) but it ruined my entire site and completely wiped out past templates, all uploaded media and all pages. Additionally I cannot upload the theme again after dragging the zip folder, and I get an error. Needless to say, this is quite distressing as all of the work I have on my site over the past year seems to be gone in a blink of an eye. What are next steps?

Aloha artfulamy17, It looks like you are working with a self-hosted WordPress.org site instead of the WordPress.com-hosted version supported here.

Learn more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

I would recommend searching on the WordPress.org support forums for similar issues. If you cannot find anything that works, you can start your own thread. The forums are completely separate from each other, so you will need to register an account there if you haven’t done so already.
