I seem to be black-listed on a blog I post on. Should I close my account?

Hi. I’ve had my WordPress account for many years, and I use it to post on several blogs. One blog in particular (run by a close friend even) puts every one of my comments into spam for him. He has to dig it out, do his best to white-list me, but EVERY one of my posts goes immediately to spam. I’d rather not lose all of my posting history by closing this account. But do I have another option?

I don’t host any sites. I only use the account to post. Any ideas?

Hi there, if you know that your comments are going to spam, first make sure that your comments are being unspammed on those sites.

Second, head over to https://akismet.com/contact/ and tick “I think Akismet is catching my comments by mistake”. Fill out the form there using the email address that is associated with this WPcom account. Then, kindly be patient for things to happen. :)

Thank you, justjennifer. I’ve done what you suggest and will now do my best to pretend to be patient.

Wishing you the best of luck with that! :)

I also found your original post in our forum spam filter and fished you out. The best thing is if the site owners on sites where you’ve left comments also fish you out. That teachs Akismet to recognize you as a legitimate commenter.

Hmmm. Interesting. On most blogs, my posts show up instantly.

On the blog in question, the owner has been fishing me out of the Spam folder for most of a year now. And there’s been no change.

Hm, just to cover all bases, can you share the address of that site in case it’s hosted someplace else and not here on WPcom?

Good idea. This is the blog: https://citsb.com/

It resolves to WordPress, so I’m pretty confident.

  • Hi there,

It looks like your friend has a large number of IP addresses added to their comments blocklist, so the most likely explanation here is that you’re using one of those IPs.

As a rule we don’t suggest adding IPs to the comment blocklist, as ISPs these days no longer assign unique, static IPs to individual users. Instead, they assign IPs to people dynamically from a pool of available IPs, and it’s even possible for multiple people to be assigned to the same IP at the same time.

So by blocking comments based on IP you can end up blocking other people besides the one you’re trying to block, or even instead of.

Explain this to your friend – you’re welcome to point them to this thread if they have more questions about this – and ask them to remove those IPs from their blocklist. Then check if your comments still end up going into spam.

@kokkieh, just a quick question – if someone is being blocked by IP on a specific WPcom site (thanks for checking) would that information be passed along to Akismet? The reason I ask is that I originally found @darelldd’s post in the forum spam filter.

  • AFAIK this would only affect the site in question, the forum Spam filter would have nothing to do with this.

    Hm, thanks staff-mckluskey

I will pass along the info about blocked IP Addresses (I’m pretty sure that his question will then be “then how do I block the known idiots who just come to stir up trouble?” But that’s for a different thread.

Back to my specific situation, I wanted to let everybody know that Akismet has waved their magic wand over the situation for me and solved it. They won’t tell me what they did to solve it, but in my case the fix was instant and complete. Of course I have no idea how long it will last.

Thanks for letting us know! Glad that helped. :)
