I am the admin for the website for my local historical society and have started with a free website with plans to upgrade it to a paid ($5 per month) site when everyone is happy with it.

I notice some features of the Dashboard are different from those I see in Youtube tutorial presentations. For example, under “Appearance”, I have just Themes, Editor, and Customise yet in a tutorial, I see Themes, Customize, Widgets, Menus, header, Background, Additional CSS, Storefront, and Theme File Editor.

Does one only get these additional submenus with paid websites hosted on WordPress?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have a look at https://wordpress.com/learn/ and make sure any videos you view relate to here at WordPress.com rather than the (more complicated) free wordpress software you can install at any other host.

WordPress powers millions of websites, from bloggers and small businesses to massive news sites and companies. This guide will help you to understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and which might be the best fit for your website. Hi there!

It sounds like you may be watching tutorials that were meant for self-hosted WordPress.org.

There are two versions of WordPress. WordPress.com and WordPress.org. There are some differences between them, and the following page explains some of these differences well: WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org.

Basically, WordPress.org is the software that you can install on any hosting company. If you use WordPress.org, you will need to pay a hosting company to get started. You will see all those options in the dashboard, but you’ll also have to worry about the technical aspects of your site (security, backups, regular updates and maintenance, etc.).

We, WordPress.com, are a managed hosting solution where we take care of the majority of the technical sides so that you can focus on creating content and customizing your site. Because we run a customized version of WordPress, the dashboard will not have all the options you see on a tutorial made for self-hosted WordPress.org sites.

Instead, you may want to go to https://wordpress.com/learn and follow our courses there to learn using WordPress.com to build your site.

Some of those features are available depending on the plan you choose when you upgrade. For example, the Additional CSS option will show up if you upgrade to the WordPress.com Premium plan.

The WordPress.com Business plan will let you install plugins and upload themes. It also enables many advanced hosting features, including real-time automatic backups.

Of course, all plans include many other features, like the removal of WordPress.com ads, the ability to use your own custom domain, access to faster support, etc. I strongly encourage checking out the full features table here: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Hope that helps! Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
