I think I made a terrible mistake…

I little over a year ago, I became irritated at the cost of the Wix hosting for my website. I did some research and ultimately decided to move over to WordPress.com. After all, I’m moderately technically savvy and it powers over 40% of the internet! What could go wrong?

I paid (am paying) for a Premium account, because I wanted to use spiffy templates, but my site is still rather simple. No need for payment or scheduling features or anything fancy at that point. The site was relatively easy to create, after I figured out user interface, which isn’t that user friendly.

Fast forward a year and a half, and I want to update my website, as part of a rebranding exercise. Now, I discover that I can’t actually do draft updates for my website without updating my entire account. So, in order for me to play around with fonts and colors and spacing on my site, I have to go from paying $96 annually to paying $300 annually? Did I misunderstand this? It’s such a basic feature, to want to see changes to your work before they’re live. Does this mean I need to move to WordPress.org and self host? I didn’t realize they were two different things until now.

Please let me know if I am indeed having trouble with my reading comprehension, or if there’s a way around this (other than the aforementioned $300 Business account). I thought WordPress was beginner friendly, and even a beginner would want to be able to preview their changes.

I see you want to have a trial of the upgraded Plan before going full bleed. Have you tried https://wordpress.com/hosting/ ?

Here you can try the higher plan at no cost and see how it comes before making a Purchase. You can also build and test your site locally using WordPress Studio. Here is a link for you to explore: https://wordpress.com/blog/2024/04/24/studio/
