I think there is something wrong with your hit counter

  It shows my blog (rodneysspace.wordpress.com) receiving almost 300 visits, on March 22nd. This seems unbelievable, for 2 reasons: first, site visits, both before, and after that date are in the 100 per day range. This is backed up by another site visit monitor, which typically registers very close to the WordPress counter, but, on March 22nd, it showed the average number of site visits, nowhere close to the amount the WordPress counter showed.

  Hi Rod,

  This was likely the result of a bot or link checking script pinging your blog several times. We try not to count bots such as search engine bots, but some bots or scripts may get through. In this case, the increase in hits may have registered at your WordPress.com stats page, but not on the other stats counter. Unfortunately, outside stats counters won’t always match up.

  It looks like the WordPress.com stats count is back to normal levels now. Please let me know if this surfaces again!
