I thought I was blocked from search engines!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I chose the option in the privacy settings to be blocked from search engines but to allow normal users but I typed my name in Yahoo! and Google and found myself.

    I really don’t want to be listed.

    How long ago did you tick the option?
    How long had you been blogging before you ticked the option?

    The search engines will spider blogs and archive the information. If you’ve been blogging for three months and ticked the option yesterday then you’ll have to give the search engines time to realise this and remove the spidered information. This can take up to a few weeks to happen.

    Also, it’s up to the search engines whether they observe the restriction or not. In my experience Yahoo pays no attention, for example.

    I’m only showing the home page within Google, MSN and Yahoo. There’s also no cache saved for the site nor any information about the site being stored. I do note that Yahoo shows you with over a hundred inbound links. I just think the engines are making note of the links to your site but respecting your wishes and not indexing your blog.

    Best bet would be to ask those linking to you to add in rel=”noindex,nofollow” to their links. That way the spiders won’t acknoledge the links either.

    Hope this helps,

    i’ve chosen the option a year ago, when i first joined wordpress.

    and yahoo shows directly links my blog and one of the first few search results too.

    I’m still showing only one page, the front page, listed. My post up above still holds. You may want to read it. MSN and Google are still only listing (but not indexing) the front page because folks are linking to it. I made a suggestion up above.

    And you need to tell us what you’re looking at with the “first few search results” on yahoo so we can see what you’re trying to discuss.

    I have 1818society ( dot ) wordpress.com
    I hit the privacy button to keep the search engines (and thereby the spammers) away and yet within 3 days my blog showed up in Google. If this leads the spammers to the site I will have to spend hours cleaning up and then I risk loosing comments which are legit. Help. Cheers

    Well having a link to your blog from the forum is a good way to draw search engines. If you can, edit that link out.

    Also, I don’t spend much time going through spam. I got about a thousand today (saturdays are big spam days) and all I did was search the spam for my typical commenter usernames. When that turned up no results, I hit Delete All. It would ahve taken me maybe fifteen minutes to go through the spam one by one hitting Page Down, Page Down. Once you get used to the ways spams look you don’t even have to read them before recognizing and deleting them.

    If your dead set against indexing then contact Google and Yahoo and inform them you dont want to be indexed or cached. They’ll usually act on that, though it can take a while for them to filter out your content.

    However going private wont neccesserily stop you getting spam. In fact you’ll still get it, just not as much. Since if you post a link to another forum, or in a gmail, it’ll be indexed that way.

    I dont understand why you’d not want people to find your blog though, the whole point of having a blog is to get your thoughts out to people. If you want it totaly private write in a book hehe

    I dont particularly mind spam, since akismet and changing a few settings will pick up 99% of them, and the occassional one that gets through can easily be deleted. Just set you options so that anything with 1 or more links goes for moderation.

    That’s the age old question!

    However, some people only write for themselves. Keeping it on wp.com means it doesn’t get lost like a book. Some people only write for a private group, possibly friends or colleagues and don’t want those private writings seen on the search engines.

    1818’s been here for six days and their blog is not listed in Google.

    Cornell has it right. If the comments made on our blog are in the public, many members will be reluctant to make comments. Thus a blog can be a useful tool even if the participation is only from a designated group, as is the case of our blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    There are many kinds of blogs. The majority are public blogs wherein the bloggers are inviting dialog from all whom are interested. Where comments are only to be received from a designated group a blog can be set up this way. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/can-i-password-protect-my-whole-blog/ But the concept that there is such a thing as anonymity on the internet is not one to rely on. Evidence would support the reverse. Some search engines will ignore privacy settings.

    Well, I moved my blog to wordpress precisely because I could keep it out of search engines. I am being cyberstalked, and I wanted to get away from that cretin. I e-mailed all the people who had me on their blogrolls to tell them my new addy (and also to tell them not to link to me anymore). My traffic is less, now, but so far the dumbass hasn’t found me.

    A determined stalker can and will find you if you give your presence away and this is exactly how people are found – they give themselves away.
    There are ways to avoid detection and some are
    (1) not revealing personal information or maintaining previous online habits that can become a breadcrumb trail to yourself;
    (2) password protecting your private blog;
    (3) not using category tags on your posts;
    (4) not linking to others; and
    (5) not leaving comments on other blogs and forums.
