I truly don’t understand……
-
Please some one, I need some help here…. one baby step at a time.
I now have a blog, and I think the address for it should show up, because it is in the drop down menu above where I am typing this.
Have chosen a theme for my blog page. Have clicked on all the links associated with that theme, but have no idea how it gets on to the page.
And could someone please explain what all the terms in forum and on the site, mean. In my search through forums I came across lots of posts, but they all had words and codes in them which I have no idea what they mean…..
widget
css
rss
tag
etc, etc, etc.Lifey who is technologically challenged
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Lifey,
Just for others’ reference because your blog address doesn’t show up here, it’s at http://lifemagician.wordpress.com/.
I’ve checked your page out and it looks different from when you first posted asking for help, so I’m pretty confident that your new theme is up on your blog. Great job!
Widgets are basically stuff you can add to your sidebar. For instance, right now you’ve got a pages widget, an archives widget, categories, blogroll, and meta. Other widgets include calendars, previous posts…there’s a whole heap of them accessible in your wordpress dashboard under “Appearance”.
RSS is basically a feed of published works and CSS is what’s used to format page layouts. Both of these are probably a bit further than where you’re at right now, so you don’t really need to be concerned with them yet.
Tags are sort of keywords used to describe your blog post. It allows readers to browse to your post or search for it.
I guess the next step for you is to try creating an entry on your blog. You can always edit or delete it later, so don’t worry about the content. Give it a go and if you get stuck anywhere, just shout out on the forum. :)
Hope this helps!

chubby, how do I get the background to show. I decided I like the one which I think is called Rubric. I just looked nice and clean, with lots of space for script. And is it possible to put photos in the text…. like, if I am telling about my trip to the Grand Canyon, can I then insert pictures of the Grand Canyon, or do they go on another page? or anywhere else other than in the text.
I have read all about the size, the limits and the uploads, all of which I understand – believe it or not. LOL
-
Make sure you create a new post, not a new page. And remember to click on ‘Publish’ to errr…publish it.
Re. Rubric theme, just click on it. If a little window opens up showing you a preview of your blog with the theme, click on ‘Activate’ in the top right hand corner of the new window.
And yes, it’s very possible to insert photos in the text. In the “Add New Post” page, click on the first logo (that looks like a photo frame) next to “Upload/Insert”. You can then upload a picture from your computer or an online picture album (e.g., Flickr), and it will appear in your text.
-
You are an absolute charm, chubby. That is clear and understandable. I have printed this for when I get round to it. Now I must eat. LOL
-
Another snag…..
When I followed chubby’s clear instructions, all went well, until I hit ‘activate’ and it came up with:
“You are not authorized to use that theme.”
How does one know which themes one is authorized to use… and why would I not be authorized to use that theme?
-
lifemagician,
You get automatically logged out of wp.com after a certain amount of time (24 hours?). Just log in again, and you will be able to activate your theme of choice. -
Thanks Tess, that worked.
Now what is the point of having a ‘remember me’ button at log in, if it is going to log you out. Pretty useless!
That is the theme, the posts and photos worked out. Really feel as if I am getting somewhere. lol
Lifey, who now has to go and investigate all about categories

The point is it remembers your password, which ought to be hard to remember at first and even harder to guess at all times.
Would you take a moment, please, to link your blog to your user name, as explained in the sticky, “8 Things to Know”?
-
-
Oh, Ella, I can’t win, can I?
Now where do I go to do that? and when do I do it? is it one of those things you do once? or at other times? and if so, which times?

Go to the main forum page. At the top of the page are a couple of threads that are different in colour than the rest, and are set off in a box. One of them is called 8 Things To Know Before Posting in the WordPress.com Forums. Click on that, read it, and follow the instructions.
-
It’s at the very top, the sticky that says “8 Things to Know.” I just found out myself how to link my blog to my username. Good luck!
-
I thought that was already at the top of this thread. Oh, this is confusing.
Anyway, since I have not yet started my blog (have absolutely no idea how to start), what blog does it link to?
And having finally succeeded in doing what I think I was meant to do, what happens now? what does the link do? where can I see it? check it out? try to learn to understand.
Lifey who wonders what else she has not yet done
-
You must have found it since the blog is linked to your name now. Thank you.
No idea how to start? Start with this link and follow some from there. Explore other support docs and don’t overlook the FAQ. The navigation tab/link to it is at the top of the forum. Good luck and happy blogging.

Thanks Ella, I have now spent hours on that page and many of its links. Can’t say I understand it, and even though I have many questions, am not yet sure how to ask them, as I do not understand what it is I want to ask. Will keep working on that page.
Meanwhile…. I have now twice received an email telling me there is a comment waiting for my approval. When I click on the first link in this email, http://lifemagician.wordpress.com/about/
it takes me to the blog page, but I do not know where to find either of these comments.Which word or link do I click on, on the page. I get too scared to click on any, I must admit, just in case it is not the right one, and I can’t find my way back to the orginal page.
Your further help would be so much appreciated.

Just click on the “approve” line in the email, and it will take you do a page where you can read the comment and approve it or delete or spam it. If you approve the comment, go to the page or post where it was made and you can reply to it if you like.
-
Thanks Tess, got that worked out.
I had no idea there is so much to learn…. guess one is never too old to learn. This may just be what I need to avoid alzheimers. LOL
Occasionally a little grey box pops up with the words something like ‘short of memory on line 1’. What does that mean? Is it anything I should be concerned about… or just ignore?
-
The alert boxes you have to be concerned about are the ones where it pops up and says, “Wait, what was I going to say?”
