I truly don’t understand……

    lifemagician,
I think you should just start to write posts, even just little short things.
What do you want to write about? That would be your blog. Why do you want a blog? Write about that.
Then if you have a question about how to do something, these forums are always available. Don’t worry about the technical issues before you must!!!
Write some posts about what you are thinking about.
Also fill in your “about” page: tell us what topics you are writing about and who your are. That is what readers will be interested in. Just write what you yourself are interested in. Just write.

Tess, I want to set it all up, so that I can post everyday of my trip for my family and friends. I leave in 4 weeks, and will be travelling for almost 6 months. Just want to be sure I understand it all *before* I leave.

Is what I want to do not what this site is designed to do?

I have seen a travel blog, pretty sure it was WordPress, no idea how to find it again, where down the right hand side it had all the places this person had visited, and when you clicked on any of them, it came up with the page of that place. I thought it looked pretty simple, but now that I am in the site, have absolutely no idea how it was done. Am desperately trying to find out.

    lifemagician,
I remember the old story about the bride who saved her best silver and linen for when it really mattered. After 50 years, her husband died, and it was too late, except for the funeral. It wasn’t what she’d had in mind for “what really mattered,” but it was too late.
I don’t mean to be impolite, but theory is fine, but use proves.
Even on my test blog, I have posts and experiments to see practical applications and implementations. Sometimes I think something will work, in theory, but when it’s implemented it proves otherwise. Start blogging or posting. Add tags and categories. See for yourself how they function. Test how you can organize your posts.
You have only 4 weeks for experimentation. Now is the time to experiment so you can understand how things will actually work. Get some hands on experience. Best to make your mistakes now! And remember, you can always delete posts or pages that don’t work for you. Experience is an excellent teacher.
Practice uploading pictures, arranging them as you like. Upload your header, or several different headers. Experiment with different themes. Figure out how you want to use categories and tags. Practice uploading images and posts from internet cafes or other computers. And remember, your blog is not written in stone. After 3 months, you might find that your first ideas have matured but you’ll still be able to make amends.

As to “Occasionally a little grey box pops up with the words something like ‘short of memory on line 1’. What does that mean? Is it anything I should be concerned about… or just ignore?” That may well be something to do with your own computer rather than to do with this blogging software.

    perfectionistgal,

You have no posts on your blog! You have lots of pages, but you need to copy the stuff over to pages instead. Read the other thread here:

Thanks Tess, I thought if I put irrelevant things in there that they would be there for good… and I really just wanted my trip. So I will do as you say, and then delete it all before I go.

Sorry for all the hassle, but I really thought it was something I had to set up and post to when I was tripping.

    Here goes…………………

    Good to hear it!
That is the fun of blogging. Mistakes are really just pixels or mysterious codes or mostly things that can be changed and experimented with. A failure can vanish.
Obviously I’m not talking about posting your email address or social security number or your deepest fantasies that would get you in trouble with your boss or your wife—someone could no doubt find that info if they wanted. But if you mess up a recipe (in my case) or a plain old story or joke or picture of your cat, who will care to hack that? No one will look at it and hold your experiments against you.
There are some who think it is not appropriate to ever edit a post once it’s public/published, but remember that it is your own blog and you can do what you like with it! I’ve changed my blog’s appearance, corrected typos, added pictures, changed the way it’s organized. The point is, I’m making it better all the time and learning as I go.
    best wishes
