I should also say… when using the browser upload nothing happens. it acts like something is loading (little icon goes around and around) then it stops after a long time period. no changes to the screen or anything.

  • Hi there,

Well the size and file format should not be an issue here. To rule out the possibility that your browser is contributing to this issue, can you try a different browser (such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome) and see if that helps at all?

If that does not work, please let me know and I will take a closer look.

    Thanks!

i switched to google chrome. still does the exact same thing.

  • Thanks. As a test, I uploaded a small MP4 file, and that seemed to work fine. How close are you to 1GB on the videos you are trying to upload? To rule out the possibility that there is something wrong with the encoding of your file, are you able to upload other videos from a different source? So not one from the batch of files you are currently trying to upload.

Basically I want to test to see if you can’t upload ANY files, or just certain ones.

If it is just the file you are trying now that are causing issues, it is a good idea to try re-encoding it with whatever software you use (modify your mp4 compression settings or save in a different file format) and try to upload this updated version. Here are the file formats we accept for video.

Let me know if that helps at all. If not, I will probably need to find a way for you to send me your file (other than the media library) so that I can try to troubleshoot it on my end.

ive tried 2 videos. one is 944mb and the other is 566mb. both are in the windows media player playback version. thats how it saved to my computer video file. it originally is video from a gopro camera.

when i check properties of the file on my computer it says its:

    mp4 video

opens with : windows media player.

is what it opens with the problem? i am not all completely knowledgeable for some of the computer stuff.

  • i am not all completely knowledgeable for some of the computer stuff.

That is definitely not an issue here. :)

For sure, the size and format of your videos are within bounds, though the larger one is close to pushing it. I can also confirm that I am able to upload a test mp4 to your site, so it is possible that the encoding of your videos is causing some issue, which you may be able to adjust on your end.

When you take it off of your GoPro camera, do you do anything else to process it, or just upload it directly to the site?

    • If you do process it in the middle, then it may be worth experimenting with your export settings to see if you can create a copy that is upload-able.
    • If you don’t there may be settings on your GoPro that you can adjust instead.

Also, it may be a good idea to create a shorter video, just for testing purposes, so that you don’t need to experiment with your “good” videos. The thinking here is to try and get any kind of video to load, and from there we can try to figure out how to get your intended ones to work.

One thing I have not asked yet, have you had any trouble uploading other kinds of video to your site? I mean from a device other than a GoPro or an MP4 from another source, like the internet.

One thing you may also want to try, especially if you think you will regularly produce videos that are near or over 1GB, is to upload them to an outside service like Vimeo, YouTube, or Flickr, and then Videos them embed them here on your site, rather than uploading them to your media library.

    Thanks for the additional info!

so there must be some issue with my home network. I tried two computers at home and could never get a video to upload. I tried a test short one and also tried it directly from the gopro. all…no luck.
so I moved the file to a thumb drive and I uploaded it using a computer from work, so that is a different network too obviously…and it worked. I do not understand what is wrong with the computers at home. pictures upload with no problems.

    thanks

  • Oh, well I am sorry to hear that, though it is a strong possibility; unlike movies, images are much smaller (by orders of magnitude) so you would not see as many issues, if any. Movies are much larger, and the nature of their encoding makes them more susceptible to problems related to timeouts, latency, and other factors common on a slow network connection.

As I said, it is worth considering Vimeo or YouTube (and embedding them into your posts from there) as you may have more luck uploading your videos to either of those services from your home network.

    Hope that helps.
