I want a single image to open gallery carousel

  Hi there.
  I am new to WP, and I am trying to create a new image gallery, but I do not want more than one image shown on the main page. I want a single image to represent the gallery, that when clicked opens the carousel.
  I tried Featured image, but can’t find where to add a link. Do I need to add code to the “Text” tab. I see the gallery array here (i.e., [gallery link="file" ids="34,33,32,31,30,29,28,27,26,25,24"] )

  Thanks. That sort of works, but it doesn’t launch the modal/overlay carousel, just a clickthrough link from pic to pic using previous / next buttons.
