I want most users to be able to post in one area, authors in another.

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to be able to have a front page that shows main stories, with a sidebar that allows any logged in “member” to post a tip, which when clicked is comment-able, rateable, and shown in the main area.

The main area, is a list of the main stories, or the first half of main stories, which when clicked can be commented on. But only authors and admin may post stories to.
I want to do a few things at the same time.

    1. A main post area, for the main writer(s), as with all blogs…

    2. a “diary”(or second post area. It shows title, name only, but title links to the story.

    3. and a “tips” or quickpost area.

1.The main post area (frontpage) is by approval/admin only, (two or three people)

    2. the second (sidebar/widget) is for any registered/logged-in person, but can be approved/promoted to main area, and a

    3. third area (sidebar/widget) for any logged in people to post a short “tip or quick hit” (all members)

logged in people can post a diary, which can be promoted to front page, or post a short tip/quicknote (all members)

approved logged in people can post to main section(two or three people)

If you are logged in, you can 1)read the main story, (or older main stories), 2)write a diary (whose title shows in a list of links to diaries on the front page, or 3)write a quicktip which also shows in a widget/ a list of other quicktips by other registered members. Everyone can read all posts/diaries/quicktips.

the point is to have a collaborative site, with a choice of “where” to post a diary or tip, and a main story/diary area for a small approved number of people.

so a main story, other stories that are not main(front page) and quick tips.

anyone registered can comment on all stories, diaries, or qucktip

    Is this clear?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t have the time to custom design a site for you sorry. Staff have provided this support documentation entry for those who want to structure their blog like a website. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

What’s critical is to understand when creating a website structure is the following:

    1. The differences between pages and posts
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    2. The impact of choosing to restruture a blog to become page based
    http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/

    3. We organize our posts by use of categories. There is only one dynamic page in a blog and we cannot post to more that one page. However, we can create the appearance that we have done that by setting up a custom menu and displaying Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation menu. Instructions > custom menus > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

This is the main link to support documentation http://en.support.wordpress.com and you will find the search box there returns results from both the documentation and from forum threads too.

This link is also an important one as it’s to the entry that lays out the differences between wordpress.com free hosted blogs and wordpress.org software installs for self hosting. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

What you are describing sounds like a forum or a wiki to me. We cannot embed either one into a wordpress.COM blog. However, you can get a free forum or wiki on the internet and link your wordpress.com blog to it.

    Best wishes :)

What you are wanting is not possible at wordpress.COM, and even with a self-hosted wordpress install, this is likely going to require a boat load of custom programming which isn’t going to be cheap.

There are “membership” plugins for self-hosted blogs that would get you part way there, but the ones I’m familiar with would require upgrading to the “pro” version to get anywhere near the capabilities you want and the pro versions I’ve seen are anywhere from $99 to $500 per year, and they would still require some serious custom programming.

About all you could do here would be to set everyone up as a contributor (they would have to have a wordpress.COM account) and then you would have to review all of those and make sure they were placed in appropriate categories, and then put those category links into the top navigation. The main page that shows posts though would always include all the posts from everyone in reverse chronological order (newest at top).

As far as allowing the public at large to post, that is not possible. You could set up a contact form that they could put their post into, and then you would have to do a copy/paste to a post, assign categories as appropriate, and then publish them.

I believe something like this could be done with a Joomla! installation with nearly no custom programming, but Joomla! is not even close to as easy to use as WordPress, is complex and has a steep learning curve.

Unless you are independently wealthy with money to burn, or this thing is going to make you a boat load of money, this is going to be difficult to do. You certainly won’t be able to do it for free.

    @TSP
Thanks for weighing in. I’m off on a brief walk about. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome and enjoy your walk about.

God help me, I’m afraid I have to say I think you need Drupal.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, oaky … I confess that I immediately thought “Joomla and TSP” when I first read the questions in the OP. LOL :P

  • Unknown's avatar

I recommended Joomla! since much of it can be accomplished without much problem, but Drupal would also work. It could be that there are Drupal modules out there to cover most of these capabilities, but from my experience with Drupal, anything you want to do with it requires hacking and coding. It’s like buying an erector set where most of the things needed to build what is on the front are sold separately.

Then of course you need to hire a full-time Drupal guru to keep it running and do the updates and such.

Think of Drupal as the open source version of Oracle.

My friends remind me that this can also be accomplished with Buddypress.

Thank you all so much. For all the commenters thank you. I will study all the links and suggestions and see what I can do with the many suggestions. I have no problem trying premium, I have a hosted .com for another project, and I have done some hacking and building.

My problem is mostly I don’t know what I am asking for technically. I have written to a couple of plugin providers, and I am looking at some of the downloadable themes and premium themes.

For each of you, you deserve a response, and as I workl through this I will try and respond.

    Thanks again!

As stated above to set posting permissions like this you would need to go elsewhere. From a functionality/design perspective it could be done or at least approximated with some CSS tinkering but you would have to rely on all your posters tagging posts correctly. In other words there’s no way to have once certain users chose which posts go in the “main content” area. Good luck!

  • Unknown's avatar

Can the tag be set in the code of the commenting system, with no other ability to set the tag for this limited post?

    tag =hidden, “27397846uienfku278dhj”

and then have a widget that shows only a list of the latest “27397846ku278dhj” tagged posts? and a restriction on posting, except for posts tagged “27397846ku278dhj”

Then the main post area shows all posts tagged anything except posts tagged “27397846ku278dhj”

this doesn’t sound like a massive pack of code, though I’d need a lot of help determining where and how to place the code.

Could someone please do comment on my blog of “Cricket (Waqar suggest afridi captain for the world cup)” because, this topic is part of my course work and my teacher will only accept it, if there are comments
