I want my blog to paginate the way it used to. Will a paid version of WP do this?

Long ago, happiness was greater when the blogs actually paginated. You could load, say, the most recent 25 entries, and at the bottom it would say ‘older posts,’ and if you clicked that, you would get the next 25 posts ***replacing, not added to*** the initial 25. So there were 25, not 50 posts. This capability vanished maybe a year or more ago or so, replaced by infinitely adding posts, so that, on the twentieth page, there are hundreds of posts in memory. User in a conversation pointed out that that was so WP would get tons of ad revenue from all those posts flashing by. Anyway, with a huge blog, I really hate that method and want to return to true pagination. Is there a paid version of WP where I could arrange to set up the previous pagination capability, given you aren’t placing ads there and therefore are not motivated to show the maximum number of pages at all times?

No upgrade makes any change to pagination. I’ll tag this thread for Staff to respond and expand on what I said.

  • @berkeleybarb, we don’t offer that on our servers right now, and frankly I’m not sure how WordPress.org currently handles pagination. But I can file a suggestion for you.

Let me make sure I’ve got it: you want to load 25 full posts at a time, but only 25. When users load 50 (or 75, or 100) full posts at a time they can start to have trouble with memory. Let me know whether that is right.

I also have a few questions for you to see if we can help, since we’re kind of unlikely to change the way this functions anytime soon:

Are most of your readers visiting the front page, or are they clicking through to individual posts?

Do you know whether they typically consume the content that way (25 full posts at a time)?

Have you considered using a theme that displays several partial posts at a time instead? Dyad comes to mind, or Cubic.. something that would showcase your pictures.
