I want my domain back
-
I signed up for wordpress and found the site impossible to use. I cancelled within a few hours for a full refund. I want my domain back that I ordered.
Site: https://homeshootca.wordpress.com.
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: Yes -
Hi @homeshootca, when you cancel a new domain it will go into holding for a bit. Please let us know which of these options works best for you:
Wait: You can wait about five days for the domain to be released. So long as no one else buys it before you do, you can purchase it again here or with another provider.
Repurchase the Domain: We can send an invoice and restore the domain. You’ll be able to point it to a new host as soon as it’s restored, then transfer the registration after 60 days.
Repurchase a Plan: To host your site here after all, buy a plan, skip the domain option, then update us here.

Thanks for the quick response. If I repurchase through wordpress, you’re saying it would take 60 days to switch to a different web host – like wix?

Hi there!
Basically, if you repurchase the domain, you won’t be able to ‘transfer the domain registration’ to another registrar like Wix for 60 days from the original date of registration. But while the domain is registered with us, you can “point” the domain to another site like Wix.
In other words, you can use the domain with a site hosted on Wix (or elsewhere), but the domain registration can’t be transferred for up to 60 days from when the domain was registered. This is due to regulatory reasons imposed by the domain registration body, ICANN.
If you have more questions, feel free to let us know.

I am new to all of this so thanks for the answers. What does it mean to have the domain registration on wordpress but run a site through squarespace/wix?
-
You’re welcome! Basically, it means you pay us for the domain registration (for the first year) but you use the domain with another host (in this case, Wix).
You can see our instructions for pointing a domain that’s registered with us to another host here: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/change-name-servers/
So when a domain is registered with us, you pay us for its registration, but then, you can point the domain to another host by changing the nameservers. This essentially ‘connects’ the domain to your hosting service provider.
If you’d prefer to keep both the domain and hosting with Wix, you can wait for the domain to be released into the market. However, remember that there’s a risk involved that someone else may register the domain before you have the chance, so you may not be able to get it back again.
Alternatively, you can repurchase the domain with us, use it with Wix by pointing it to Wix nameservers, and transfer the domain registration to Wix anytime after the 60-day transfer lock is over.
Let us know if you have more questions.

hm.
How much would the domain cost to repurchase?
And wouldn’t the only person who would go after the domain homeshoot.ca be one of you in this chat? lol

Hi there!
How much would the domain cost to repurchase?
The price for the domain only will be $15 for the year (the price is in US Dollars, so please be aware of any currency conversion fees your bank may charge you.)
And wouldn’t the only person who would go after the domain homeshoot.ca be one of you in this chat? lol
Not really. There is an entire industry around snatching up canceled and expired domains and selling them at a high price. They use automated bots to backorder domains that they think will have a higher value for resale.
You can search
domain squattingon Google to learn more about what it is and how it works.
