I want my followers to receive their email with the full content…

I am using the more tag to shorten my posts so that when they show up on my home page, only the first part of it shows up and they have to click “read more” to keep reading – all is good so far. But when I use that more tag, it also only sends that first bit in the email to followers. I want to keep my home page short, but I want followers to receive the full post content on their emails. How can I do this?!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. As far as I know, the more-tag doesn’t influence what goes out in email notifications. That is instead controlled by your feed settings.

Under Settings ->Reading in the dashboard, change your feed settings from Summary to Full Text. Keep in mind this will also make your full post appear in the Reader and other RSS feed readers. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/reading-settings/

    Hi thanks for responding!

I checked out my settings –> reading –> change your feed settings and it looks like mine was already on “full text.” When I first started the blog and wasn’t using the more tag, the whole post was showing up on my homepage and also on the emails that followers would receive whenever I published a post (I had my husband subscribe so I could check out how those emailed looked :). But when I did start using the more tag, it would show only the first little bit on both the home page and the email.

I follow other bloggers who are able to keep their posts on their home page short, but the emails followers receive are the full text. Hmm…I guess I’ll have to keep hunting around for answers? :)

  • As I indicated I’m not entirely sure about the more-tag and email notifications – I use both Summary in feeds and the more-tag on most posts so never see the full text in emails – so let me tag this for staff to follow up. Please be patient while waiting for them to answer.

    Wonderful – I appreciate your help! :)

  • Hi! The “more” tag will indeed cut off emails, actually. Have you thought about using a theme that automatically truncates the posts on the front page? Baskerville comes to mind…

Thanks for clarifying that. Does the more-tag influence display in the Reader as well, or is that completely controlled by feed settings? For future reference.

Here is a list of several themes that automatically shorten posts on the front page. It’s two years old, so doesn’t include the newest themes that might have this feature, but it gives you some options if you want to follow @supernovia’s suggestion: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=17#post-1396410

Thank you both for your help! I’ll have to look into that, but until then, I’ll just make do with what I can :)

  • Hi,

Does the more-tag influence display in the Reader as well, or is that completely controlled by feed settings? For future reference.

The reader will display the text after the split, but it does trail off a bit unless they open the individual article. I hope that helps!
