I want my RSS feed to reflect my new podcast title, do I need a domain change?

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently realized I wanted a hyphen between the two words in my podcast title, and would like that hyphen to be in the RSS feed as well. Having the hyphen will make my podcast easier to find in iTunes, Stitcher, Xbox music, Pocket Cast, etc.

I don’t know the easiest way to accomplish this, or if there is a simply solution. If I register another custom domain, and simply add a redirect, will I lose all of the posts on the original registered domain? Would I be forced to perpetually pay for both domain names in order to keep the original content I’ve posted up to this point?

If I need to start over, now is the time, as I’ve only been at this for a month in a half.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Maddy,

If you want a hyphen in the URL for your site and RSS feed, you will need to register a custom domain spelled out the way you want it (with the hyphen) to use with your site.

You’re welcome to have multiple custom domains pointing to the same WordPress.com site — they will automatically redirect to the primary domain that you have selected under Store > Domains in your dashboard. This won’t change any of the content on your site. Even if you choose not to keep any custom domains, your content will always be available at the free WordPress.com address shown on your Domains page.

If you’re ready, you can go ahead and register the new custom domain by following this guide: Register a New Domain

If you have any questions about this, please let me know! :)

Thanks, that’s what I was afraid of :(

I reread your answer, and understand now. I misunderstood originally and thought I repost the question asked differently. I should’ve done that on this thread. Sorry, will do it right next time.

Looks like I will pick up a second custom domain, and transfer all my current content to the second custom domain, then pay for a redirect. Then resubmit my new RSS feed (with the hyphen) to all the podcast aggregators.

    Does that sound reasonable?

    Does that sound

    Hi Maddy,

You don’t need to transfer any content or pay for a redirect in order to do this. :) You can have a second custom domain on the same blog, and both domains will point to that blog’s content. All you’ll need to do is set up and purchase the second domain for that blog.

You can add a second domain to your blog by going to Store > Domains in your dashboard. Under “Register or Map a Domain Name:” you can enter the new domain you want and then click “Add domain to blog.” This will add the second domain to the same blog, so you won’t need to move any of your blog’s content.

Once you have the new domain (with the hyphen), you can go to Store > Domains and set that domain as the primary domain on your blog. Then, anyone who tries to visit your old domain will be automatically redirected to the new one. Then you can resubmit your RSS feed with the new URL (with the hyphen) wherever you’d like.

Let me know if you have any questions!
