I want the old editor back! The Block Editor is Garbage!
-
There are lots of us who hate… no… loathe the new block editor. We are bloggers, not web designers. We carefully selected our theme to deal with layout and such, so we don’t feel that the features the block editor provides are necessary or appropriate. Please read the article I wrote to try and understand what I am saying. The link is at the end of this entry. You’ve given us the wrong tool for the job! We need a “word processor”, not a “desktop publishing program”. Just give us the old editor back, or at the very least, the option to switch back to it permanently, so that when we use the “write” and “edit” links, we don’t get the block editor.

First you can always use the Classic Block which is the old editor, https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/.
Second: The Classic Editor is also available in WP Admin — the classic WordPress dashboard, https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor -
I’ve tried the classic block. It’s buggy at best. Also, there is the issue that when you switch to “html editor”, it turns off all the add-in buttons, so you can’t add images and such.
I don’t mind using the dashboard classic editor, but I would rather be able to have that set as the default editor if that is my choice. I want to be able to use the “Write” buttons and “Edit” links, but they take me to the block editor, which even when trying to use the “classic block” doesn’t work well, especially when I switch to HTML mode.
I also don’t like having to switch to the block editor to access the Pexels library. That still is not accessible when using the classic editor on the dashboard. These things need fixed:
1) Option to use classic editor by default, completely turn off block editing, or something of that nature.
2) Access to Pexels from the classic editor in the dashboard.
3) In the block editor, access to all media insertion tools needs to remain visible and active when viewing post in the HTML editing mode. -
Hi, thanks for the feedback. I’ve noted it for our devs / designers.
While we’re preserving the classic editor for now, it won’t be getting modifications to add new features and what not. If there are features you like in the new editor, can you share more details about what problems you’re running into so we can address those and make it usable for you?
We may also be able to address bugs in the classic editor block if you’ll send more details on that.
Regarding media insertion from Pexels, if you’d like, you can add media via https://wordpress.com/media — then it will be available in either editor for insertion.

I agree strongly with all the criticisms about the block editor. It reminds me of the 1980s IBM/Apple wars when Apple introduced products for people who didn’t know how to write code and didn’t want to learn. They just wanted to click on whatever limited choices were offered to them by the Apple operating system. Fine for children and amateurs, but clearly not for everyone. I use WordPress for both my personal website and my academic research center’s website. If this is the direction of WordPress for the forseeable future, I will be switching hosts. Or, would all these frustrations be resolved by moving my sites to the .org platform and getting off of .com?

Hi there,
Or, would all these frustrations be resolved by moving my sites to the .org platform and getting off of .com?
FWIW the Block editor is the default editor in the open source WP(org) software and has been since December 2018. It uses the WP Admin dashboard exclusively.
If you are self-hosting your own ORG install, you could install the Classic Editor plugin, but you’d end up with the same set up as we already have now in WP Admin, where the original WP Classic Editor is available.
IMO, the Block Editor is easier to use than most people believe and has been greatly improved over the last couple of years. If your sites have already been switched to the Block Editor at MySite, you can try it out in a draft post and there’s a tutorial to get you started at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
