We don’t allow plugins on WordPress.com for security reasons. Plugins are a feature only available for self-hosted blogs provided through WordPress.org.
However, we do have some really cool widgets. Perhaps one of those might meet your needs?

ok, so is there a way to have the image the full width of the blog, like Isee in so many photographers blogs.
The images on my blog are too small and have a silly looking border. -
In this case, it’s more about the theme you’re using.
We have a few that are specially designed for photoblogging listed at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/subjects/photoblogging/

i tried a few but it’s what i am lookiong for. When I insert a gallery, the images are small. I understand that I can choose the size of the images when i insert one by one but not when i insert a gallery. Anyway around that?

You can change that by manually modifying the gallery shortcode via the HTML editor tab.
See this for more info: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode

i tried several options, but when i insert a gallery of images, depsite choosing a different size they all appear small.
Are there any tutorials showing how to proceed, it’s not user frindlly at all, I am afraid to say.

this is not my official blog, just a test blog i set up to try things out.
What i would like to achieve is to have the images side by side like in this blog
http://www.mariannetaylorphotography.co.uk/blog/
Not sure this is possible with wordpress. Thanks for your help anyway, you seems be determined to get to the bottom of it :)

What they have on the other blog is quite a bit more involved and not really something that our gallery script can do.
About the closest you can get is this:
[gallery size="large" columns="1"]That will display all the images for the full width of the content area in a single column.
