I want to add another Label on the Menu Bar "Subscribe" or "Sign Up"

  • Unknown's avatar

I just pasted the following and it doesn’t look right:

    [display-posts category="Nut-Free" image_size="thumbnail" wrapper="div"]

Show me all the nut free recipes!

  • Unknown's avatar

But do I paste that inside the brackets after the other coding I copied and pasted above?

The “show me all the nut free recipes” link goes outside of the brackets. It’s not part of the short code, it’s just a regular link like you’ve used on your front page to link to specific posts.

    The text is:

Show me all the nut free recipes!

It links to the category page for your nut free recipes which is

    http://muffinmama.com/category/nut-free/

You can either paste the code I gave you before using the “text” view of your editor, or you can create the link the way you normally would.

Hopefully that helps. If not, let me know and I’ll explain a different way.

I just added “Show me all of the nut-free recipes” and linked it, but it’s opening a new page that looks exactly like the page it links from.
And, the “Show me all of the nut-free recipes” is not appearing below the last image.
    Can you help?

I just added “Show me all of the nut-free recipes” and linked it, but it’s opening a new page that looks exactly like the page it links from.

You have to use this link. It links to the full category page.

    http://muffinmama.com/category/nut-free/

    If you use the link:
    http://muffinmama.com/nut-free/

It will go back to the original page.

And, the “Show me all of the nut-free recipes” is not appearing below the last image.

That part is weird. Could you update the URL and publish your changes. Let me know when that’s done and we’ll investigate why it’s not showing up on the page.

Got it! I did this and it looks great.

Is there any way to have the “Show me all of the nut-free recipes” go to a long list of the muffins with very small thumbnails or a long list of just their names? I think it’s annoying to scroll through loads of long articles and recipes, but maybe I’m wrong. What do you think? I feel like people want to see/find what they want more efficiently in this day and age….

You could create another static page and use a different version of the display posts short code that displayed a list of all your nut-free recipe titles. Personally, I’m more likely to choose which recipe to stop on from the pictures so I like seeing the full posts. Totally up to you.

If you decide you want to see what the page with just the titles looks like, let me know and we can experiment.

I hear you. I’ll keep it as-is for now. I so appreciate all of your help.
I’m wondering how I can make my blog more user-friendly and what I could get rid of or what to keep.
I’m finding that I have a lot of followers on facebook, but people don’t really follow me on my blog or sign up to receive emails. Is there any way to draw people to sign up on my blog itself?

Sure thing. If you change your mind later, let me know. I’ll be happy to help you set it up the other way.

I’m wondering how I can make my blog more user-friendly and what I could get rid of or what to keep.

I really like what you have now. It’s easy to learn more about you and why you love muffins, the recipes are well laid out. It’s easy on the eyes, and easy to navigate.

The only reason to consider removing anything is if you want/need your site visitors to do something specific that they aren’t doing. Once people visit your site? What do you want them to do there, what’s your “call to action”? (It’s not strictly necessary to have a call to action, but if you already have one in mind, we can set up your site to inspire more people to do the thing you want them to do).

I’m finding that I have a lot of followers on facebook, but people don’t really follow me on my blog or sign up to receive emails. Is there any way to draw people to sign up on my blog itself?

It looks like you are getting pretty good traffic from Facebook and Twitter. And you have a subscription widget in your sidebar in a good location. The next thing is to add a compelling reason for people to subscribe. I wouldn’t go into too much detail, but people who follow you on Facebook only see the posts Facebook decides to show them. With that in mind, I’d change the title on your subscription Widget to say something like “Never Miss a Muffin” and then add some follow up text that says something like “Don’t miss out! If your kids love muffins as much as mine do, you can get every muffin recipe delivered straight to your inbox for free. Click the button below to get started.” You could even change the title of the button to “Send me muffins!” if you want to be a little over the (muffin) top.

I also noticed that the way you have the widget set up now, logged in WordPress.com members get a message that says they are subscribed even when they aren’t. Changing that should increase your signups by a lot.

That was a lot! Hopefully it gives you something to think about. If you need anything else or have more questions let me know, I’m here to help!

Ha! I love that: “over the (muffin) top”!
I’ll try going a little “over the muffin top” for a while and see where that gets me. I just changed the Subscribe widget to reflect your comments – thank you so much! And thanks for following me, too :)

Thank you so much for catching that the subscribe and unsubscribed buttons were the same!!! Yikes. Maybe that was part of the problem. I do feel I get good traffic from facebook and twitter, but often, I think since facebook and twitter jump to my wordpress blog, people can read a recipe and don’t necessarily feel they need to sign up?

I consider my call to action is getting people to “muffinize” and getting them excited to bake muffins. Also getting followers so that I can roll out my muffin mixes when they’re ready :)

Please let me know if you have any more ideas regarding my site. You’ve helped me tremendously.

Glad I could help! One more quick change.

In your widget, you’ll see under

“Optional text to display to logged in WordPress.com users:”
it still says “You are subscribed”

That means WordPress.com users who visit your site will be told they are subscribed even when they aren’t. You’ll want to change the text there the same way you did for e-mail subscribers. For WordPress.com readers remember they have the option of subscribing in the reader or via e-mail–or both! so you’ll want to reflect that in your copy.

I consider my call to action is getting people to “muffinize” and getting them excited to bake muffins. Also getting followers so that I can roll out my muffin mixes when they’re ready :)

That’s great. A very clear call to action. Let’s see how the changes we’ve made so far do for a while. My sense is they will help.

After that, you might consider adding an e-mail newslettter/mailing list. That gives you the option to send your followers direct e-mail in addition to copies of your posts.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh I see what you mean!

So, should I say “Click the Follow Button below to see the latest muffin recipes, and more!” Something like that? Because if they “follow” how are they notified of new posts? By email?

Right now, the people that sign up and subscribe, do get emails.

What do you mean “email newsletter/mailing list?”

  • Unknown's avatar

On the home page, should I delete the comment below so the site looks more like a website and less like a blog on the front page?

And—On the mobile version, is there any way to make things different? I feel like there is a lot to scroll through on my phone.

  • Unknown's avatar

Because if they “follow” how are they notified of new posts? By email?

They actually get to decide. When I follow WordPress.com sites I follow in the reader–very rarely by e-mail. But it’s personal preference. You can see what I mean here:

    https://wordpress.com/following/edit/

This page shows all of the WordPress.com sites you follow. You have the option of following just in the reader, or in the reader and by e-mail.

That having been said, I’d go with something like “Click the Follow Button below to have the latest muffin recipes, and more delivered right to you!”

getting into the intricacies of how the reader works in your widget probably isn’t a a good use of your screen real estate.

What do you mean “email newsletter/mailing list?”

In addition to your website, you can build an opt-in mailing list where people signup to get marketing e-mail from you. Here’s a short article about how the two communication methods can work together:
    http://www.copyblogger.com/smart-blogging-and-email/

This is very much a “next step” though. Don’t worry about it until you are feeling good about how your website is doing.

On the home page, should I delete the comment below so the site looks more like a website and less like a blog on the front page?

I think that’s a great idea. Do you know how to do that?

On the mobile version, is there any way to make things different? I feel like there is a lot to scroll through on my phone.

I checked your site out on my phone and the scrolling doesn’t bother me. What in particular would you like to change?

  • Unknown's avatar

Again – this is all so helpful!
I don’t get the “next step” email newsletter thing…but I hear you, I won’t worry about that just yet. I think down the line, I’d like to have a website developer and I’m hoping they’ll organize this.

How do I delete that comment on the homepage to make the homepage look more like a website? And is there anything else you would do to make the site less “bloggy” looking and more like a website?

I see you already figured this out on your own, but here’s the walk-through on how that works in case you need it later.
