Hi,
You can turn off automatic renewal for your domain name or plan by choosing the option to cancel on the Purchase page.
If your purchase is outside of the refund window (30 days) then it will stay active until its expiration date and you will not be automatically charged for its renewal. You will still receive e-mail from WordPress.com alerting the impending expiration date so that you have the chance to manually renew.
Happy blogging!

I don’t want to cancel the No Ads purchase that I just purchased.
I want to turn off the auto renewal for next year. WP has my credit card info and I don’t want it to use it without my approval when my no ads feature expires after one year. -
Yes, this is why I told you to wait for your purchase to be outside the refund window (30 days). Sorry if that wasn’t explicit enough.
You can refer to the following support page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/faq-renewing-and-canceling/#auto-renew-off
Happy blogging!

@pellymade – Also be aware that if your No Ads upgrade expires, you won’t be able to renew or purchase it again as a single, standalone upgrade.
All standalone upgrades have been eliminated on WordPressdotcom in favor of the Premium and Business bundle upgrades.

Good point! Hopefully, there’s still an alert sent before the expiration date.
-
@heliodore – I add all my upcoming renewals in my own calendar with a reminder sent a month ahead of time. Saves me a lot of potential headache later. :)

@heliodore – After having been on the web for nearly 20 years, I learned this the hard way! =:-O

thanks a lot and excuse me for not getting it at first, english is not my mother language… Also, I think all this is a bit complicated, they should have a “cancel auto renew” button instead!
-off topic: I like your name, it’s “the gift of the sun” in greek ;)thanks for letting me know, that’s quite a negative surprise…

My only concern now is if I will be notified when expiration date approaches? -

Yes! You’ll be notified by email about one month before.
